One year on...
This month I have celebrated a year in what I still call my 'new' role as Group Manager for PPI (Public Performance Income) and Neighbouring Rights at Naxos. What a year it's been, working from the kitchen table…but thanks to the wonders of technology I’ve been able to start getting to know colleagues from the 13 regional offices Naxos has around the world (I think it’s 13!).
I feel extremely fortunate to have started when I did, changing job just as lockdown started – and everyone at Naxos has been extremely supportive and welcoming. I have made some good virtual friends who I look forward to meeting when we're finally allowed to travel! I have at last managed to get into the UK office for the first time, even if it was to say goodbye to UK managing director David Blake, to whom I owe a great deal of thanks.
My first year at Naxos has really opened my eyes to the reach of technology, and I have really enjoyed the buzz of working for a record company. It is an inspiring group to work for, and I’ve added pictures of some of the best releases of the year – all from labels and artists where each payment for broadcasting and public performance, no matter how small, can work together to build a meaningful payment.
This means my role is more important than ever, and as always, the importance of good metadata in classical music is key. It lies behind every successful payment for use of recorded music. I have my time at PPL to thank for the realisation of this, working in a Repertoire team that has always strived for the best and most accurate data possible on sound recordings. This can only lead to quicker, more accurate royalty payments.
As I move into a second year the big challenge is to keep the data as good as possible, and to do all we can for our labels and performers, so they can get on with the important business of making the music we all love!
