No one works harder than a Farmer.

I can tell you this for free: no one works as hard as a farmer. Year in and year out, the amount of care they show their farms daily needs to be studied. Uprooting weeds, tilling the soil, and thinking of the challenges they face—heat, floods, drought, pest infestations—they are lowkey the real MVPs.

You’re wondering why I’m praising them like this. So, I recently bumped into one in the market. Let me gist you.

I went out to get some foodstuffs in the market, and then I stumbled upon one of my friends from childhood. His name was Daniel, but we used to call him “Old Man” because he loved going to the farm with his father. His dad owned a huge plot of land growing up, and I remember that every harvesting season, we got either yams, potatoes, corn, or even fruits for free.

We lost contact when I left for the university. The last thing I heard about him was that his father passed away about three years ago and willed the farm to him. I can’t tell you how happy I was to see him again.

So, he and I got to talking. I actually spent the whole day in the market with him, just gisting. He said that after his dad passed away, the first year was tough for him. He didn’t realize how much responsibility having a working farm was. Year two was better; at least he understood how to run the farm properly. Then the third year came, and he was just losing all his crops every quarter. At first he thought maybe his village people were after him.

He told me how he planted beans at the beginning of the year, and the heat completely dried them out. In June, he planted corn, and the floods washed his crops away. These losses made him very devastated and took quite a lot from him financially.
