One Weekend, Two Victories

On the eve of Super Bowl LIV, many Kansas City natives plundered grocery stores and stretched their Tomahawk-toned arms while visions of honey badgers danced in their heads. But about 900 locals prepped for the soon-to-be-historic game a little differently.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art held a Super Bowl pre-party on February 1, 2020 (more precisely known as the annual Young Friends of Art fundraiser, Party Arty).

Party Arty 2020: Night of the Shining Sun was a tantalizing feast for the senses. Inspired by the museum’s featured exhibition, Queen Nefertari: Eternal Egypt, the evening carried a powerful, mysterious, and beautiful aura.

The Nelson’s Bloch Lobby boasted dramatic mood lighting and dancing hieroglyphics that kissed each stark white wall.

Guests were enchanted by the ardent Quixotic crowd performers and dazzled by the Kansas City Ballet’s Egyptian inspired performance.

As the evening transitioned into the Nelson’s grand Kirkwood Hall and Rozelle Court, guests were given a taste of Queen Nefertari’s “afterlife” with royal libations and opulent optical illusions.

I was honored to be Party Arty 2020’s Vice Chair, and I am so proud of each dazzling detail the planning committee executed with ease.

Our Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl in an incredible game, but an equally incredible outcome that weekend included the victorious fundraising efforts that will go on to power the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s educational efforts, community outreach, and free access to more than 500,000 visitors each year.

A prime example of the vibrancy of Kansas City and the people that live there. There is a great deal for the people of KC to be proud of.
