The Marketability Challenge

Amateur Screenwriters and the Pitfall of Unmarketable or Too Niche Concepts

In #screenwriting, aspiring #writers face a significant obstacle: developing marketable yet original concepts for their spec scripts. While originality and creativity are highly valued, falling into the trap of unmarketable or niche concepts can hinder an aspiring #screenwriter's path to success. This article explores one of the most common mistakes I see made by amateur or beginning #screenwriters, shedding light on the challenges they face and providing valuable insights to help them navigate the complex landscape of marketability.

Developing a marketable concept is crucial in capturing the attention of your producers, executives, and other gatekeepers. However, amateur screenwriters often fall into the trap of pursuing ideas that are either too niche or lack any appeal. While it is important to embrace originality, understanding the market and its demands is equally essential to your screenwriting survival. Writers must strike a balance between their creative vision and the need to craft a concept that resonates with a wider audience.

One of the dangers of niche concepts is their limited commercial viability. In an industry driven by box office profit and audience engagement, scripts with niche concepts struggle to find financing or distribution. While niche stories can be artistically satisfying, aspiring screenwriters must assess the potential marketability of their concepts. Identifying universal themes or incorporating elements that can attract a broader audience can greatly increase the chances of a script gaining attention.

Unmarketable concepts can also arise from a lack of understanding of current trends and audience preferences. I am not telling you to chase trends but it is important to be aware of what is selling and where the market is going. Ignoring market trends or failing to keep abreast of industry developments can result in scripts that feel outdated or disconnected from the contemporary landscape. You must conduct research, analyze successful films, and television shows, and stay informed about emerging storytelling trends to ensure their concepts align with the ever-evolving tastes of audiences.

Moreover, unmarketable concepts often suffer from a lack of clear target audience identification. Every story has its audience, and understanding who that audience is plays a vital role in developing a marketable concept. Amateur screenwriters sometimes overlook the importance of defining their target demographic, resulting in stories that fail to resonate with any specific group. A deep understanding of the intended audience enables you to tailor your concepts, themes, and characters to generate maximum appeal without being formulaic.

Crafting a marketable concept is an essential skill you need to master. While originality and creativity are valued, it is vital to strike a balance between unique ideas and broad appeal. By avoiding unmarketable or overly niche concepts, understanding current trends, identifying target audiences, and embracing universal themes, writers can increase their chances of breaking into the industry. Remember, finding the sweet spot between creativity and marketability is the key to unlocking success as a screenwriter.

Though I agree this shouldn't be set in stone or discouraging to writers. Because if I know anything about trends they tend to come back. They may come back with a vengeance even. No one wants that just yet.
