One Thing We Can All Do Right Now

This moment in which the whole world recognizes a common threat is rich with opportunity as well as peril. This is a moment in which we can choose how we want to rebuild. Instead of waiting for our leaders to tell us what they think we should do, we can tell them what kind of world we want to live in, really, from our hearts. Not what we think is possible or what we are resigned to, but what we really want.

But first, we need to describe that world in concrete terms. It’s not enough to say, “I want to live in a world that values beauty.” What does that mean? What would such a world look like, feel like, smell like, taste like? How would the people in that world behave and how is that different than how we have behaved in the past? Whatever it is you really want the world to be like, describe it as concretely as you can. Put it out there by whatever means you can. That way, we can find each other, support each other, and magnify our voices. The more people who do this now, the better chance we have of reinventing ourselves for the better. Now is the time to lead from below with our best selves and it all begins with describing the conditions you really want to see in the world.

What have you learned from the pandemic experience? What works and what doesn’t? What needs to change? What kind of world do you want to live in? It doesn’t need to be complicated, just put it out there so we can all know what each of us is thinking. Let’s use the technology that connects us to do discover our shared values and build the connections and solidarity we need for real change.
