The one thing that will keep you going when everything sucks

The last few weeks have felt quite difficult, with no end in sight. It’s nothing serious, just a tougher time to navigate. It felt more difficult because I’ve also been using all my knowledge and all my tools on myself - you know, all those things that I share here? I tried them all on myself, in an attempt to keep my head above water.

There is one thing that never fails, even though, of course, my mind keeps telling me that it’s not enough.?

And that thing is focusing on small steps, and small wins.?

Here’s how it works: say things don’t go your way, and haven’t for a while. Maybe your job has been sucking more than usual. Maybe your job search has stalled. Maybe your relationship feels a bit same-y.

When you look at the situation as a whole, it feels doom and gloom, as well as unfixable. No way out.

What we usually fail to notice in these situations are the small wins.

If you’re struggling greatly, even getting out of bed can count as a small win.

Not finishing that bag of crisps mindlessly could be a small win.

Reaching out to someone who might support your job search could be a small win.

Finding time for yoga could be a small win.

Going for a 10 min walk could be a small win.

I counted several small wins for myself today: a long sleep, a healthy breakfast, a fun gym class, enjoying the rain on my face (rather than feeling miserable because of it).?

All these small wins added up to me really wanting to write this and share it with you, in case you needed to read this today.?

Massive win.

Monica: I am sorry to know that you have been going through a tough time. Taking small, a.k.a. immediate next, steps + celebrating small wins is a great (and evergreen) combination for finding positive energy. Hope you begin to feel in-control over things that you feel you need to control.
