Day 327: The Four Agreements
Yesterday I gave you a year-by-year history lesson according to the media and their infatuation with freaking you out and your EYEBALLS…
Speaking of freaking out, I just made the ghastly mistake of googling medical symptoms.
I just wanted to say goodbye.
In other news…
if you want to be successful in business…
Fear nothing and worry about everything.
Anyhoo…
Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:
‘The Four Agreements’
My big brother committed suicide when I was 16 years old over a business failing…
He was a world-class skier and enjoyed the finer things in life (like his beloved Trans Am!!) at a young age… would have definitely done so as he got older.
To honor his memory my mission has always been to ‘live for two’ and subsequently I tend to carry a lot of extra weight / expectations with me.
This might explain my 2 story eight-car garage...
I was on a private call with some of my 7-figure business coaches that use our lead generation system and business coaching software… They have teams of between 7 and 85 business coaches doing the actual coaching.
This book, The Four Agreements, came up multiple times and I thought I should do some further homework on it for you...
A KEY takeaway is to eliminate judgment.
Others and your own.
Easier said than done…
Don’t Take Anything Personally
Very seldom are other people's actions a slight towards you. Others are far too wrapped up in their own thoughts / emotions / circumstances.
You can eliminate an enormous amount of suffering from your life if you stop tormenting yourself by letting your own thoughts run amok.
Very powerful to be empathetic where you would otherwise be judgmental. You don’t know what others are going through.
Be Impeccable With Your Word
Speak thoughtfully and with integrity… ‘say what you mean and mean what you say.’
Under promise and over deliver comes to mind… and simply put, take responsibility for your words and subsequent actions.
Importantly… don’t be judgemental with yourself.
You are enough just as you are… but when you tell a little white lie… you lose respect for yourself.
Ouch.
A simple example: You’re supposed to meet someone at 8 pm and you’re late for no particular reason.
You text and say ‘Traffic was terrible’ even though that’s not true.
This is a SLIPPERY SLOPE, mostly, “for you, with you”, and a breach of this agreement.
Narcissistic people have little secrets left, right, and center.
Don’t Make Assumptions
If you want freedom in your life then get used to having lots of uncomfortable conversations. The more you do it the less uncomfortable it becomes.
The more freedom you’ll have.
A mistake we all make is thinking that everyone views life as we do… this causes you to fear being yourself around others by wearing a fake mask.
Three Common Mistakes:
- Painstakingly fear rejection which makes you lack courage.
- Fear others, judge, abuse, and blame you as you do yourself. If they broadcasted your thoughts… my guess is they’d likely commit you).
- Make assumptions about yourself that create conflict within you.
A classic example is when we send out a text to someone and don’t get a response… you start thinking the worst and allow your emotions to spiral.
The classic is getting sending a follow-up “?” text.
Don’t worry… we’ve all done it.
Assumptions only make an arse out of you and me.
Bottom line… wait for the facts and don’t jump to conclusions.
When you “Need Nothing from Them” you’ll find jumping to conclusions will stop… not to mention make you 10 times more attractive to work/be with.
Always Do Your Best
It's unrealistic to think you’ll always be on your game… but always do your best to put your best foot forward.
If you focus your intention and energy on being self-aware and owning your faults rather than blaming others… you’ll have measurably less guilt and regret.
Learn to pause rather than quit.
There you have it… that’s my insanely condensed version of the book, The Four Agreements.
If you like… I recommend you read it and you should get your high-end coaching client to do the same.
