Day 302: An Unexpected Gift
Yesterday I gave you 12 random, profitable, thoughts and it appears many of you liked how I managed to pass a drug test when I was 19 years old….
Was happy to keep the job but wow was I pissed at my dealer.
Speaking of random…
Recently I told you that Ethiopia is the hottest inhabited place on Earth.
Not sure if you heard but Canada and Ethiopia played a hockey game recently.
The score?
Canada: Ate
Ethiopia: Didn’t
Anyhoo…
Your ONE COACHING THING Today Is:
‘An Unexpected Gift’
This is so incredibly fitting for me today for a variety of reasons I won’t bother you with…
It’s Justice John Roberts Commencement Speech at his son’s 9th grade graduation.
“Now the commencement speakers will typically also wish you good luck and extend good wishes to you.
I will not do that, and I’ll tell you why.
From time to time in the years to come, I hope you will be treated unfairly, so that you will come to know the value of justice.
I hope that you will suffer betrayal because that will teach you the importance of loyalty.
Sorry to say, but I hope you will be lonely from time to time so that you don’t take friends for granted.
I wish you bad luck, again, from time to time so that you will be conscious of the role of chance in life and understand that your success is not completely deserved and that the failure of others is not completely deserved either.
And when you lose, as you will from time to time, I hope every now and then, your opponent will gloat over your failure.
It is a way for you to understand the importance of sportsmanship.
I hope you’ll be ignored so you know the importance of listening to others, and I hope you will have just enough pain to learn compassion.
Whether I wish these things or not, they’re going to happen.
And whether you benefit from them or not will depend upon your ability to see the message in your misfortunes."
The post John Roberts’ Commencement Speech appeared first on Marginal REVOLUTION.
I hope you see the same power in this message that I do.
I can give you a hundred examples of:
“Not getting what I wanted…” and looking back at it as an amazing gift.
It didn’t feel like it in the moment, however.
This quote also feels fitting:
“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”
~ Steve Jobs
You heard it here first.
