One Step to Tranquility
We are all subject to the thoughts and feelings that filter our personal versions of reality. Whatever we think becomes the framework for how we experience every moment. When we feel the weight of anxiety in our hearts or wake in the early hours with an overactive mind and the pressure of too many problems, these thoughts shape our grasp of how the world works. The tension exerts a negative influence on our health and wellbeing and narrows our perception until we see nothing except for the problems and difficulties. This is the well-trodden pathway that leads to depression and burnout.
A large part of the problem is that the unchecked flow of mental and emotional energy makes us feel out of balance and unable to control the events that shape our lives. So, how can we restore our inner peace and regain a clearer perspective of what’s really possible in our lives?
Since everything we know and accept as real is only an extension of our minds, a subtle shift in our thought patterns can exert a very powerful shift in how we think and feel and how we interact with everything and everyone around us. We know that slower, deeper breathing can help to restore a sense of equilibrium to our minds and bodies. But when we adopt a calming, reassuring outlook that sees the world in more positive terms, we begin to feel better. Our tension dissolves. The obsessive need to be in control subsides. We touch the ocean of calm that resides within every human heart. Suggesting to ourselves that everything is exactly as it should be, that there are no mistakes, no errors, that life is unfolding precisely as it should, evokes a wonderfully restorative feeling of inner peace and neutralises the old habits of worry, doubt, fear and anxiety.
When you consider the impact of fretting, obsessing and worrying, you realise that this is not a helpful, healthy nor productive use of our energy. A deeper breath and a simple smile invite us to choose a better way of understanding our lives. We cannot control everything nor should we squander our energy in futile attempts to bend the world to the demands of our fragile egos. Accepting that we are where we are supposed to be eliminates the internal resistance that struggles against the pathway that we have chosen. A calmer approach opens up the possibility of change and helps us to adapt to the arrival of new circumstances because we feel confident in the process of our own growth, development and evolution.
Everything is a product of our belief systems. Choosing a more helpful outlook is the ancient key to a happier, healthier and more productive way of living.
