One step at a time
Recently I was talking to a client about exercising. She wanted to do some exercise as part of her weight loss and weight management and she was feeling a bit overwhelmed, where to start? She had a few medical problems which restricted what she could do, and this added to the challenge. During our discussion she said “This must seem strange to you, you enjoy exercise”. That is usually the case but not always, see: https://www.glenyschatterley.uk.com/sometimes-i-have-to-use-a-crowbar-to-get-myself-off-the-couch/
When I started taking control of my weight loss story I did some exercise, mainly Zumba with other things done occasionally. I bought a simple inexpensive step counter and I set myself a 10k daily target. Most days I achieved it but not always, and if I didn’t achieve it I wrote down what I had not managed and then committed myself to make up the shortage. Slowly, I found ways of achieving the 10k each day and then I increased the number of steps, sometimes by another 1k and sometimes 2k. There was no set amount of increase or time before I made another increase.
Occasionally things got in the way, and I found ways round these occasions that worked for me. Sometimes I have been limited, because following surgery I have not been able to move around, or do weights, or I have only been able to do some light upper body weights. As I recover, I increase the amount and scope of what I do. This can take weeks and sometimes it takes months. The bottom line is it is about doing something: fulfilling the commitment I have made to myself.
We talked around various options, and I have left her to make the decisions about what she will do and when she will do it. At our next session in a week’s time, we may discuss this further, but this will depend on whether she wants to. After all, what we are working on is her plan not mine.
