As a podcast host, I've had to improve my conversational skills to make sure I create an enjoyable experience for the guest and the listeners. Doing hundreds of interviews taught me a simple trick that not only keeps conversations flowing but also enhances my negotiation abilities. I call it "pulling the thread."

Curiosity and asking questions are essential aspects of hosting a podcast (and negotiating). It's my responsibility to ensure the conversation is coherent and meaningful for the listeners.?

During interviews, guests often touch on multiple topics in a single response. As the host, attempting to address all of them simultaneously can lead to a chaotic and disorganized conversation. To avoid this, I take detailed notes to make sure that I capture the main points and then I focus on delving deeper into one topic at a time.

Not asking enough questions about a topic can cause valuable information to remain undiscovered. This is where the concept of "pulling the thread" comes in.?

Imagine a piece of clothing with an exposed thread. You pull the thread until you reach the end. Similarly, in a conversation, you want to stay focused on a line of questioning that fully explores one topic until you reach its logical conclusion.

This approach not only improves the flow of podcast conversations but also plays a crucial role in successful negotiations. By "pulling the thread," you can uncover critical information that may influence the outcome of the negotiation. Additionally, it demonstrates your genuine interest in the other party's perspective, fostering trust and rapport.

The simple trick of "pulling the thread" has been a game-changer in both my podcast hosting and negotiation skills. By asking more questions and diving deeper into specific topics, I've been able to extract valuable information and create more engaging, informative conversations.?

Yes, that genuine curiosity and attention - so long as it doesn't seem like an interrogation. Authenticity really helps with that - and reflecting back what you hear, so as not to seem like you're just asking a series of questions. Questions and listening are an art and require PRACTICE
