One Selfless Habit That Can Lift Others and Enrich Your Own Life

I work 1:1 with you and help you leverage your habits, mindset and discipline, to reach your bigger goals.

Let me challenge you with something simple but powerful: compliment people more.

It might seem small, but it can have a huge impact, on the person you’re complimenting and on you.

Think about it:

“I love your hair.”

“You look great today.”

“I loved what you said earlier.”

“You’re always so supportive.”

“You are very thoughtful and kind.”

And let’s be honest, when was the last time you said something like this to someone on your team? A friend? A stranger?

Here’s a story.

Last Thursday, while walking along a train platform in London, I couldn’t help but notice a woman’s hair - stunning, healthy, and effortlessly shiny.

She was sitting there, scrolling on her phone, completely in her own world.

So I stopped.

I told her, 'Your hair looks amazing!'

She looked up, we both smiled, and we ended up chatting for a few minutes about hair products and what works for her.

And then I kept walking. With a big smile on my face.

We’ll probably never cross paths again, and that’s okay.

It wasn’t about getting something back.

It was about taking a moment to share a kind word.

(Although it did make me wonder, are we spending more time on our smartphones because we don’t talk to people as much? But I digress.)

This is what I want to share with you:

A small, genuine compliment can change the energy of a moment.

It can brighten someone’s day. It can shift your mood, too.

But here’s the key:

  • Be authentic. Compliment what you really notice and admire.
  • Don’t expect anything. It’s not about validation or attention.
  • And don’t be sleazy or weird. Keep it light, respectful, and kind. Don't cross lines.
  • It's about them, NOT you. The focus is on their qualities, achievements, or effort.
  • It’s Meant to Uplift: Your compliment serves to encourage, motivate, or bring joy to the other person.

As someone who works with high achievers and leaders, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the big things.

But often, it’s these small, intentional, unplanned moments that build true connection and trust.

So, here’s my challenge for you as we head into 2025:

Be intentional about spreading positivity.

Compliment someone today.

Compliment your spouse, your children, your friends, your employees, your neighbours, a stranger.

See how it lifts them (and you).

What’s one selfless habit you’re committing to next year?

I hope it's intentionally spreading kindness and positivity (without expecting anything in return).

I know many of you are feeling low energy and drained right now, and it’s easy to get caught up in the festive rush without taking time to recharge. I’d love to help you start the new year with fresh energy. Try my daily energy audit framework – it’s free and easy to follow:
