The One Room Katie Davis Will Never Forget - BY JANE KIM
Interior designers and other experts in the home industry work on an impressive number of spaces throughout their careers. But even if some of the makeovers and redesigns start to blend together after a few years, there are some rooms that are just truly unforgettable.?
So, to give designers a chance to revisit their favorite projects—and to bring you plenty of inspiration for your own home—we’re sharing the one room these pros will remember forever. For some, there’s a sentimental connection, for others, there was an obstacle they never thought they’d overcome. But no matter what, these rooms are worth remembering.
Katie Davis of?Katie Davis Design?understands the importance of creating a space that feels both personal and enjoyable to be in. With her expertise in incorporating bursts of color and nature inspired details, she transformed an empty space under a staircase into a beautiful and vibrant entryway that'll invite guests to sit down and get comfortable.
Besides the design challenge of creating a functional and cozy place, Davis shared other difficulties she faced during the process. "The hardest thing was the wallpaper. Where do you stop the wallpaper when the wall goes up 3 floors? We made the call to put it under the stairs and on the main wall (2.5 walls)."
Additional design tricks that were applied was "downlighting the art—to keep visitors’ eyes on the first level."
We made this space something inviting and warm—a gathering spot for when people arrived, rather than a formal pass-through space.
At first glance, the space may only appear as a charming common area with eclectic and floral adornments, but there is a much deeper intent and story to be told than what's displayed.

"The chest is an heirloom, from the man of the house’s mother, the wooden side chair was an antique, and the daybed was from the wife’s family. It was so fun trying to find a home for these pieces and give them new life" explained Davis. Each furniture piece held a close and special meaning to the couple and was thoughtfully placed complimentary to the decorative and bright mixed patterns.
From the little yellow slipper chair with Lisa Fine's fabric (one of Katie's favorites) to the matching Soane Britain wallpaper and fabric, it creates a blend of contemporary and old-fashioned. With the many antique options she got to restyle, Davis found a fonder appreciation in reworking them in new ways to fit modern themes and into her future projects.
"We always used antiques, but this project sealed the deal for using and reimagining antiques in most of our projects", says Davis.
The most rewarding experience during the whole project was when Davis was dropping something off at the home a couple months after they had installed, and "the husband, who is very tall, was cozied up on the daybed working on his laptop", remembers Davis. "It was awesome to see that they love the space and use it the way we intended."
Looking back to the project, Davis feels joy.
"This has always been a special project for me, because the couple was so kind and open to ideas; we truly ended up caring about them and the way they live in the space."
