No One Will Remember Your Name

No one will remember that you fixed that car, motorcycle, piece of equipment, generator or that boat next month. No one will remember that you called around everywhere to help the parts department find that part to get your customer out a week from now. No one will remember that you worked 55 hours a week for years to support your customers a year from now. No one will remember that you always kept your bays clean a week after you leave. What was your legacy?
Ultimately, deep down, we do what we do to support our lives outside the job. Just like any other person, in any other position, on the planet. We come to work to make money, to support the things we love to do and the people we enjoy our lives with. For some that is plenty to fulfill our desires to be successful. For others that's a byproduct of doing what we love.
They say ", The measure of a leader is how many other leaders they create." As senior techs and leaders in our shops we can apply that same thought to what we do daily. How many techs have you had a meaningful impact on?

Senior techs, how many times have you been doing something and you specifically remember the tech that taught you that? All the time right? That is part of that person's legacy. When they taught that to you, it lives on, in you.
Best of all when you set the tone in the shop, the other senior techs will follow your lead. I can't say it will happen in a week or a month or a year. Eventually, they will see the fulfillment you get from mentoring. At first they may even give you a hard time. Your management team may even give you a hard time. Don't forget, no one will remember their names either. Write your legacy.
Let me know in the comments if this is content you like. I may do some follow ups in regards to the challenges I have faced over the years with mentorships.
