One relationship away from changing your future!

One relationship away from changing your future!

In episode 301 of the Who Ya Know job networking show, we invited Chas Wilson & D'Mar Phillips. CEO & best-selling author, Chas Wilson, brings 20 years of experience building impactful relationships through networking. Today he is connected with several successful business owners, influencers, athletes, & celebrities through his company, Master Networks & can't wait to share how you're only 1 relationship away from changing your future.?

In this episode, Chas talks about Video Marketing World. He says, " Video Marketing World is a video conference. I was at a master networks event, and a gentleman sat next to me. When we were done, we introduced ourselves to each other. His name was Scott Simpson, and he invited me to this conference, Video Marketing World. I went and we started connecting and we started talking and last year in the mid-summer, he reached out to me and said: Hey I want to expand and grow this company. I would love it if you would consider partnering with me and coming in as a partner in the video marketing world. After a few months of a handful of conversations, we made that happen."

Talking about why networking is essential, Chas says, " I'm writing a book about this right now, and it's called Impact: Becoming A Person Of Positive Influence. In there we broke down a model. And that is the mindset, skillset, and network is the success formula for making an impact. As we looked at a lot of people, we understood that what they neglect is the network. There is another component to networking that people miss. If you look at two sides of this coin. One is, I need a network to grow a business or when I'm looking for a new job. Somebody has done all the hard work. They have done all the heavy lifting to have an audience. The same is for job seekers. Somebody has done that heavy lifting and has an audience, they have attention, they have people. Why would you hold that close to the vest and not tap into every person and say hey, here is what I'm looking for.

Chas further adds, "What that does on the other side of the coin is that it also insulates you. Especially, for people who are starting a business or who are growing in a job, you are more valuable to a company. Or if you have your own business, as you get success, you need to insulate yourself with people."

Chas talks about building relationships in your network. He says, "I'm gonna share with you and the audience a method. If they use this method, it will help them to connect with anyone. It's the BOND method. So here is what it is:

B: Build on a common interest

O: Occupation exploration

N: Need discovery

D: Develop an opportunity

Talking about his company, Master Networks, Chas says, "I had been part of networking organizations for 10 years. And I owned multiple real estate companies and we built it all through relationships and networking. And again it insulated us when the crash came in 2009 or 2010 in the real estate industry. I sold out my interest and I wanted to start this networking thing because I realized that's what helped people. And so I just started it. We're a relationship organization based on world-class education and then the referrals come as a byproduct, not the other way around. We're relational, not transactional."

Chas talks about getting over your fear, coming out, and networking. According to him, "You don't have to be this outgoing extrovert to network. It's been shy introverts that I have had better one-on-one conversations at any networking event.? I would much rather go deep with three people there than try to connect rather than swiping left or right."

Talking about his books, Chas says, "I have written two books. One is 'Five+One: The Entrepreneur's Formula For Success.' The other is a mindset book, 'Now Make Good' which is a mantra I have been living by since I was about 20 years old. Just DM me on Instagram and my team is already ready right now to send the link to you to get the audiobook."

D'Mar Phillips is a Senior Organizational Development & HR Executive. He is often regarded as a strategic, transformative, people-first leader who focuses on delivering real business results, while building highly collaborative working relationships across an organization.?

D'Mar talks about his journey and experience of working at Clarus. He says, "I have worked with an amazing group of people and I think my team is still looking for people to fill some critical roles that we have. A transition is just a rebirth and I get to define my next role. I think the heart of the organization is its people. That's what I believe is the heart of all organizations. It's truly the people."

Talking about what's next in his career plans, D'Mar says, " I had started in the 2011-2012 time frame. One of the things that are critically important to me is mentoring and development and trying to help others. We are all here for a purpose. My faith has always informed my decisions, and so, I try to help as many people as I can."

D'Mar talks about connecting with people. According to him, "I'm a people person. I think my whole career, I started with an undergrad in accounting and very quickly figured out I kind of need to be around people, and that's just not my forte. I'm that person that goes around and seeks out different folks in the room, not to talk about myself. I drive my energy from people. "

Talking about his route further, D'Mar says, " I pray over anything that I submit for. And it works out if it works out.? Some of the best things are unanswered prayers.

I need to slow myself down, and I think that's what God is doing. Sometimes some of those decisions that you make for yourself aren't the best decisions, and you need to be patient and sit for a moment."

On becoming more appealing to employers, D'Mar says, "Make sure that your resume is concise to the point. It has action-oriented points that appeal to the position of the role that you are going for. So speak to the position, speak to the role."

To all the job seekers, D'Mar gives a message. He says, "Be confident in your skillset and your abilities, right. People are just looking for different opportunities and you will find an organization that values you.? So, be prepared for that. Change is not always easy but it could be the best thing that ever happened to you. And if an organization doesn't value you as an individual, as a person, for your unique skill set, then that organization isn't for you. It's time to move on."

?? Chas at 17:52 - I think most people from the outside think they work for me. And whether that always seems evident or not, I work for them.?

?? Trevor at 18:44 - You don’t need a million followers. Jesus only needed 12 to change the world.?

?? Chas at 22:28 - For me, I lack a lot of things. I’m not the most skilled. I’m not that great in a lot of areas. But what I lack in my skill set, I can make it up with my network.?

?? Chas at 25:00 - You may have a bad transaction or a bad experience, or somebody just as resents your success. So. they start bad mouthing you. But now I have created such solid relationships, that those people now, they are surrounding me, sort of walking around. Those things hardly even get to us or penetrate because I have this network that’s insulating me.?

?? Chas at 28:42 - I promise you, connection over anything else, will get you a job.?

?? Chas at 37:15 - What most people mistake is that they are always looking for how and what to do. It's always who I need to connect with. Always!

?? Chas at 39:14 - He saw something in me that I couldn’t see for myself. That’s what we all need. We need somebody in our life to be that for us and we need that to be for somebody else.?

?? Chas at 41:52 - They're hiring the skill set & I hire attitude. I'll teach the skill set.?

?? Chas at 42:30 - Hire to attitude. Hire to their mindset. Yes they need to have some minimal level skill set of course. But hire attitude. Hire people that match your values. That's what you’re looking for.?

?? D’Mar at 52:52 - My faith has always informed my decisions, and so, I try to help as many people as I can.?

?? D’Mar at 53:50 - How you let people go is indicative of the culture.?

?? D’Mar at 56:05 - That's what retains people is to fully engage them, all aspects of who they are in that type of role.?

?? D’Mar at 57:40 - I pray over anything that I submit for.

?? D’Mar at 58:45 - Some of the best things are unanswered prayers.

?? D’Mar at 1:04:42 - A shot in the dark is gonna land somewhere, right?

?? D’Mar at 1:05:52 - If an organization doesn't value you as an individual, as a person, for your unique skill set, then that organization isn’t for you. It's time to move on.
