One reflection away from being an asshole...

As a business coach, I have the privilege of working with a wide range of individuals from all walks of life. Every day, I am inspired by the growth and transformation that I see in my clients as they navigate the challenges of the modern workplace.
Today, I had a conversation with one of my coachees that really struck me. As we were discussing a particular issue, he made the comment, "I am one reflection away from being an asshole."
Taken aback by his bluntness I kinda laughed, he then talked about his thought process and what came through was the degree of self-awareness and empathy that he was dialling into.
In essence, he recognised that he had been harbouring certain thoughts and attitudes that, if acted upon, would have made him come across as insensitive or even cruel - pretty much like an asshole.
However, rather than simply dismissing these thoughts or pushing them aside, he took the time to reflect on them and consider how they might affect others.

In doing so, he was able to see things from a different perspective and dial up his empathy towards others. This small but significant act of self-reflection allowed him to avoid making a mistake that could have had lasting consequences on his relationships with colleagues, clients, and even friends and family.
This experience reinforced for me the power of self-awareness and empathy in business and in life. As we navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, it is easy to get caught up in our own concerns and priorities. However, by taking the time to reflect on our thoughts and actions, and by considering the impact that they might have on others, we can avoid inadvertently causing harm or creating unnecessary conflict.
As a business coach, I am committed to helping my clients develop the skills and mindset that they need to succeed in their careers and their lives. And while every journey is different, I believe that cultivating self-awareness and empathy is a key component of any successful path.
So to anyone who is reading this, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own thoughts and actions. Consider how they might be perceived by others, and whether there might be a different perspective that you haven't yet considered. By doing so, you might just find that you are one reflection away from being a better, more empathetic, and more successful person.

1 年Love this Matt. They key thing is that your client recognised his thoughts and hasn't acted on them. That is brilliant. What you think and feel vs what you say and do can be different things and therein lies the art of excellent leadership and management.
