One reason your content isn't bringing in sales

One of the biggest mistakes I see when reviewing content is that it often tries to convince the reader they have a problem they’re not aware of, instead of meeting them where they already are.

For example. A productivity coach wrote a post saying, “You might think you’re managing your time well because you’re always busy, but being busy doesn’t mean you’re productive. If you don’t take control of your schedule, you’ll never reach your goals.”

The call to action? A program for time management.

The problem with this approach is that people who feel busy usually think they’re being productive. They don’t recognize that they’re overloading their schedule with tasks that don’t matter. So while the coach is trying to create awareness about a problem, it misses the mark because it’s addressing something the audience isn’t actively noticing.

A better approach could be: “If your to-do list feels endless and you’re still not making progress on your biggest goals (even better would be to get specific on what the goal might be), here’s one shift that will change everything.”

This speaks directly to someone who already feels overwhelmed by their tasks and is aware they’re not getting results - it aligns with their current awareness instead of trying to convince them they’re doing something wrong.

Here’s another example. A fitness coach wrote a post saying, “Most people think they’re healthy just because they exercise regularly, but if you’re not tracking your macros, you’re probably not seeing the results you want.” The post then tried to explain why macro tracking is essential and offered a nutrition coaching program at the end.

The problem with this is someone who believes they’re doing well because they work out regularly isn’t necessarily concerned about what they're eating and their macros. They think they’re on track and don’t see a reason to change. The post essentially tries to create a problem where the reader doesn’t feel one exists.

A stronger way to frame this might be: “If you’re hitting the gym regularly but not seeing changes in your body composition, here’s why tracking your nutrition is the missing piece.”

This speaks directly to someone who’s already frustrated with their lack of progress, without trying to convince them they’ve been doing it wrong.

One more for good measure...

I once saw a post from a business coach that said, “You think you’re scaling your business by delegating, but if you don’t have clear systems, your team is wasting hours every week.”

The offer? A systems strategy session.

The mistake here is trying to convince the audience that their delegation process is flawed. For most business owners, delegation feels like progress, not a problem.

A better way to position this would be: “If you’re growing your team but still feeling like tasks aren’t moving as efficiently as they should, here’s a simple way to create systems that actually save time.”

This aligns with what they’re likely noticing - a lack of efficiency - rather than making them defensive about their efforts to scale.

When content tries to convince instead of align, it creates resistance. People don’t want to be told they’re wrong or unaware. But when your content meets them where they already are, speaks to what they’re experiencing, and offers a solution they’re already seeking, that’s when it starts to convert into sales.
