One reason! why you should try for hex dominant meshing in Finite Element Analysis

This article is for FE beginners. In this article, I am going to share one case study where I meshed a model with mesh type and sizes. We are going to see how a hex dominant mesh can help a FE engineer to reduce the required computation resources.

The animation above shows the CAD model considered the discussion of case study mentioned in this article.

This model was meshed using ANSYS Workbench. Three mesh methods were followed as:

  • Free meshing (Triangular meshing)
  • Free meshing with refined edges
  • Mapped meshing (Hex dominant)

Challenges in Hex meshing

Hex meshing is always preferred but it is not possible to perform if the shape of the model is too complex. But, in case you still want to go with HEX meshing, you need to do geometrical simplification. With this I mean to say that you need to divide/slice you model into simple shape. Just take a loop how I achieved hex meshing for the model above. If you need a video tutorial, ping me I will get back to you.

Other results of meshing are shown below:

Voila! A clear cut 55.2% reduction in mesh size. This means that you are going to save both computation resources and simulation time.

Wait! but what about results!

Don't worry, showing results without discussing about boundary conditions has no meaning. So, lets first see what are the boundary conditions

Oh! Load and displacement, which means structural simulation. Now you expect the outcomes, displacement and stress.

Conclusions:

  • Looks like, this part is going to fail under the given load (stress is exceeding, yield strength which is 300 MPa)
  • Free mesh model is directly out of order. Because of low resolution of mesh, the results are interpolated over long elements
  • Talking about free mesh with edges refined and Mapped meshing, the results are quite similar, but with the advantage of computation resources and time saving

I hope this will help you to understand
