The one question you're not asking

Dreadful people are strangely compelling ??
After nearly abandoning "Ripley" on Netflix for being bleak and plodding (warning - it lacks the sun-kissed enchantment of its previous incarnation with Matt, Jude and Gwyneth), my husband and I have found ourselves hooked.
Stick with it over the first few, slow episodes. You'll soon be fully immersed in its tense, noirish vibe as the net tightens around an icy (yes you can be hot?and?icy) Andrew Scott.?
Oh, and you'll also soon be shouting at Inspector Ravini, whose failure to ask ONE KEY THING allows Ripley to build lie upon chilling lie.?
"For the love of God, just ask someone?**&%^$£@@(&^%!" ??
No, I won't spoil it for you.?
But take it from me, there's only one question - and damn it, it's a simple one - that's needed to unravel Ripley's monstrous web.?
But ain't that just the way of things.?
It's the question we're not asking that's keeping us stuck??
But here's the weirdest thing.
And see if you agree with me.
From my experience coaching hundreds of people, the question we aren't asking ourselves isn't a question we haven't thought of.
You're not a police detective who hasn't spotted the killer clue yet.
Who just needs another couple of episodes to figure out how the puzzle fits together.
Far from it.
The question you're not asking yourself is a question that deep down you already know.

You just don't WANT to ask it ??
Because the answer is likely to be challenging. Or uncomfortable. Scary. Exposing. Risky. Awkward.
Now I'm no mindreader. I'm not claiming I know what that question is for you.
In fact, when I'm working with someone 1-2-1 and they're stuck in the weeds, talking round in circles, I often don't need to find the killer question.?
I can simply ask them.
?? What's the question I really need to ask you right now?
Or even more interesting?
?? What's the one question you don't want me to ask right now?
Whatever your current career dilemma, I dare you to try it.?
I'd love to hear what you discover. Hit Reply and tell me how that landed.?
(As a fellow coach said to me last week, "I love it when people actually respond to my emails. I reckon they think I've got some big automated thing going on, when actually it's just me and a keyboard. It makes my day when I get a reply". You know what? Me too)
Stay curious,
Rachel?

5 个月Oooh this is brilliant. Am deep down the dark rebrand hole and I think this will really help! Thank you - love your newsletters Rachel!
Translator. Author. Curious person.
5 个月"?? What's the one question you don't want me to ask right now?" I am SO going to start using this on my children! We don't have Netflix, because the only way I can find time to write is by not watching TV. But, coincidentally, I'm rereading all the Ripley books at the moment and enjoying them immensely. Utterly compelling, never gets old.

5 个月Spot on about Ripley! My husband has ditched it but I've kept going and now I'm hooked. This is a brilliant question, thank you for sharing. Will definitely use it in the future.

5 个月I was laughing out loud when I started to read your newsletter as I felt exactly the same with Ripley. By the end of Episode 2 I was ready to ditch it but by episode 4 I was hooked. Loved the black and white - made it even more sullen. But the detective - I know what you mean, I kept saying, for gods sake just get on with it! ?? I had a client just last week that I really really wanted to ask the question that I didn't want to ask - and I chickened out. I love your 2 suggestions and will try those next time.
LOVE this question & your newsletter. I always ask it when testing my kids for exams. Naturally they hate it!!!
