That one Question!!

"The other day I sat down to write a bio for my online media platforms. Since #LinkedIn, #clubhouse, #instragram are the most trending ones, I thought why not update them, it would just take few minutes. Little did I know that my bio would remain blank for not one, two or five days, but for a long time. Yes, you read it right! My mind could not collate any words, sentences, or paragraphs. This was the moment when I realized how important it is to know oneself which lead me to a thought, that, ‘Tell me something about yourself’ is a question that’s most dreaded question one can ever face, isn’t it.?

Every interview or initial meeting or your social media bio is incomplete without this star question that can make or break your first impression. Since most of us are in the transition phase of moving from one job to another, I felt apt to share some simple pointers to be considered while preparing for this question;

  1. Introduction: Start your answer by talking about where you come from and how did you choose this career path. Talk a little about your current job and achievements. Then move onto talking about your previous job and its scope of work that relates to the one you have applied for.
  2. Personality: Continue your answer by mentioning about your strengths. Mention a few words about your likes and dislikes. Add information about your talents and interests, for example, hobbies, extracurricular activities, your passion, and more. Do not forget to link your qualities to the role you have applied for or your current job. It will help the employer to know you better and visualize you as a good fit for the role.
  3. Goals: Conclude your answer by stating about your future with regards to the career. Put forth about your plans or ideas and where do you see yourself in the next few years. And how do you aim to achieve your timelines.
  4. Duration: Limit your answer to 2 – 3 minutes. Since this is an icebreaker, save time for the next set of questions.
  5. Tip: You may always include a phrase or quote that you most believe in and follow!

The hesitation during your answer may change your tone. Thus, it is particularly important to prepare yourself prior to the interview day. Start writing down about what and how you want to put out your answer. Think about all the significant achievements of your career that you wish to highlight.?

I believe, most of the hiring decisions are made in the first few minutes; right from the way you greet the staff and the first thing you say, which will most likely be explaining about yourself. Hence, be precise and give out important details that will catch the attention of your interviewers. Keep it personal yet professional!

Oh yes, and my bio is pretty much getting there too. ??"
