One person. One vision. Millions of lives changed.

Last Tuesday, Dan and I had the privilege of meeting a fantastic human being, Jeremy Gilley, the founder of Peace One Day. This global movement has touched millions of lives, proving that one person can make a difference. Jeremy is more than just a dreamer; he’s a doer, a relentless optimist who has spent over two decades turning the idea of global peace into a tangible reality.
In 1999, Jeremy embarked on what many deemed impossible: establishing a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. Through relentless determination, compelling storytelling, and tireless advocacy, he succeeded. In 2001, the United Nations officially adopted?September 21?as the International Day of Peace. This day has become a powerful symbol of unity and hope, demonstrating the possibility of a world without conflict, even if only for 24 hours.
But Jeremy didn’t stop there. He transformed Peace One Day into a platform for action, mobilising individuals, organisations, and governments to make peace more than a lofty ideal. The results are undeniable. In 2007, a ceasefire in Afghanistan during Peace Day enabled 1.6 million children to receive life-saving polio vaccinations; a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration over conflict.
What makes Jeremy’s work extraordinary is his belief in the collective power of humanity. Through Peace One Day, he has educated millions about the importance of peace, inspiring action from grassroots initiatives to multinational campaigns. By focusing on education, Peace One Day is shaping the next generation’s perspective on conflict resolution and global citizenship, with resources reaching schools in over 100 countries.
A crucial part of Peace One Day’s success lies in its ability to leverage the power of art and culture. The initiative, often co-produced by Jude Law, has hosted global concerts featuring iconic artists like Annie Lennox, Elton John, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Lenny Kravitz, and Sting. Actors such as Angelina Jolie, Michael Caine, and Forest Whitaker have also lent their voices to the cause. These events, held in venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena, and even Goma Airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo, combine music, storytelling, and activism, spreading messages of peace and unity to millions worldwide.
In addition to promoting peace, Peace One Day has addressed broader global issues like racial discrimination and climate action through digital broadcasts. These events have featured performances by artists such as Youssou N’dour, Emeli Sandé, and Jack Savoretti, and have reached billions, encouraging individuals to reflect and act on these critical challenges.
Jeremy’s work is a powerful reminder that peace doesn’t start with governments or institutions; it begins with individuals. His vision is a call to action, showing us that ordinary people, united by a shared purpose, can achieve extraordinary things.
Meeting Jeremy left me extremely inspired. He embodies the famous saying, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do”. His optimism and determination are what the world really needs right now.
As Peace Day approaches, I urge everyone to ask: What can I do to make the world more peaceful today? Jeremy has shown us that peace is not a utopian dream but a choice we can make every day.?
Together, as he’s proven, we can create a more beautiful world rooted in empathy, kindness, and understanding.
