Be the one to open doors

Be the one to open doors

In every career there is a moment, where on reflection, things might have been different. If you didn't get that recommendation, apply for the promotion or were introduced to that important someone.

Little things matter

Speaking to a colleague this morning reminded me how little acts of kindness can open doors of opportunity way beyond the simple act itself.

My colleague recently secured her dream job. And it all happened by accident. At a birthday party an acquaintance promised to introduce her to the CEO of a company she admired. Emails were exchanged and a few months later she landed her dream job.

Sometimes, I wonder what would have happened if she didn't get the introduction. Of course she would have looked for a new job in time. But this introduction did more than that. It accelerated her career by a few years. It changed the way she thought about herself. It gave her confidence to go for the job she really wanted.

Be the one to open doors

Maybe the lesson here is be the one to open doors. And then step back and be amazed at what happens next. Like I said, it's the simple things.

I believe in human potential. I believe in commitment to making shit happen for the benefit of the collective. When I’m able to, I put my money where my mouth is. I put my conscious efforts there all the time.

Lovely article, great advice :) I found you on Wonderful Women list forwarded by Niamh Bushnell. Is there a chance I could pick your brains about expanding my company GrantTree to Ireland? I would be super grateful for 30 min of your time when next in Dublin :)

Very thoughtful piece Mary and love the image. Progress is all about opening the right door and moving through at break neck speed when it's clear you've hit the wrong one!

I really love this. I have recently experienced 'little acts of kindness' from so many wonderful people in the tech community and Mums in Technology Ltd wouldn't exist otherwise. I hope I will be open doors for others one day.
