The One and Only
Hope Yanling Yin, PCC
An award-winning technology executive turned Coach, Speaker, and Advocate for Women In Tech. I partner with global companies and executives to elevate their leadership presence, team cultures, and business growth.
I have walked into many rooms being the one and only. Sometimes it’s intimidating, other times, it’s lonely and uncomfortable. Have I thought about quitting? Many times! but I didn’t because I know I earned that seat and I have unique value to contribute. Instead of leaving, I became an integral part of those rooms. And I opened doors for others.
Being the only woman in a tech room can be tough, but we are equally talented. We may solve problems differently and in innovative ways. Our experiences matter. Take up space. Own it.
Every time you're present, you make room for others. You're changing the future. You're making a difference.

BRING OTHERS ALONG
What room have you walked into as the one and only?
I remember the feeling that I could not afford to speak up, especially if I did not agree. I hope that my presence did make a difference, even if I stayed quiet. I did not have enough faith in my ability or position back then. For anyone facing this going forward, it's reasonable to "read the room" and choose your responses thoughtfully. In any case, you do make a difference, and do your best to contribute, challenge being sidelined, and bring others along, as Hope has suggested. We need you!
