No one needs to overthink walking: It’s all good

No one needs to overthink walking: It’s all good.

But, sometimes people do. I was speaking with a busy client about this very subject the other day.

So to prevent more of that, I did some… thinking ??

We made a list of the different goals you can achieve with a walk, including these five.

The result: A purpose—and a sense of accomplishment—no matter what kind of walk you go on.

1. Multitasking

You can make a long list of things you’d ordinarily do in a chair that you can do on your feet.

Do you have to be seated for that work call? Probably not.

Same with listening to the latest episodes of your favorite podcasts or an audiobook from an author you love.

2. Functional walking

This is physical activity in its purest form.

You’re trying to get somewhere, like the post office, or to achieve a specific goal, like walking the dog.

3. Social walking

Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll with your spouse to catch up at the end of the day or more purposefully walking for exercise with a friend or neighbour, you’re still spending time with someone you like.

4. Problem-solving

As the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said, “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”

It works best when you decide what problem you’re trying to solve before you set out. Silence your phone and focus on that problem from first step to last.

5. Feeling better

Researchers at Cornell University found that just 10 minutes in nature can significantly improve mental well-being in college students.

Their finding makes intuitive sense: It’s hard not to feel better about yourself and the world when you’re outside and enjoying the sights and sounds, the fresh air and sunshine, and the fact you’re not staring at a screen.
