No one needs to hate learning

No one needs to hate learning

I am teaching private lessons and yesterday I got angry!

I was teaching this teenage girl python and talking to here about things that might be relevant to her if she will continue learning computer science and then she told me she don't want to learn programing later on, that by itself is fine, you can love whatever you want but when I asked her why she said the it's because her teacher was bad she doesn't like it and that what made me angry.

Thinking about how I didn't like being in math lessons but I can hear Matt Parker or Numberphile?talk about math for hours how Steve Mould?can teach me physics principals, Tom Scott that can teach me things from geography to advances in robotics and most importantly how I was learning game development from Brackeys?while getting 60s in my programing class at school.

So what are they doing different?

Actually it's a really simple answer, they for them to be successful they have to get you attention and to hold it for as long as they can, therefore they are using YouTube tactics like

  • Adding a lot of visual aid
  • Storytelling
  • Real life examples that you can see the results of
  • Never being monotonic for even a second
  • Using comedy
  • Making sure that their content is for everyone
  • Having communities that can help you

But how can teachers to that?

  • Make sure that the students know the basics before moving on - if they don't know how to convert string to integer don't tell them to import classes
  • Give them a story for every mission - instead of just 'removing objects from arrays' task tell them that where are werewolves in the town and they need to take them to a new town.
  • Make it funny - while teaching random instead of rock paper scissors tell them to make a calculator that always gives the wrong answer

And this are just the basics, every teacher and educator across the world need to lean from social media, from the people that are making their salary by making other love subjects like math, science, geography and more.
