One of My Dumbest Mistakes...
I apologize for the clickbait title. You'll get over it. So, the other day, I visited my website to upload a few new images, as I do. Next, I visited the home page and realized that it looked the same as it did before I uploaded the new imagery.
Let that last bit sink in. EXACTLY THE SAME.
If you don't see the issue with this, don't worry. We can still be my connection on LinkedIn. Hell, I'd been doing this for the better part of a year without realizing the issue.
The only websites you repeatedly visit are the ones that offer fresh content. You don't check Twitter, Instagram or Facebook to look at a stagnant webpage. You go there because you can count on there being new content. Really insightful of me, I know.
My point is that there was no indication that I was adding new blog posts, articles or pieces to my portfolio on a regular basis from the home page. I wasn't giving any repeat visitor a reason to click on anything because they had no cue that any content had been added. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I know.
So, a man on a mission, last week, I decided to figure out how to change this. As much as I like to pretend I'm a Danish astrophysicist with incredible website hacking skills, I'm really just a average shmo who relies on Squarespace to help him make a squeaky-clean portfolio website. (This is where I wish they paid me to say that)
Getting to the point, I'm proud to say that my website homepage now features three distinct areas:
- Latest Articles = 3 Most recent pieces of literature I've managed to compose.
- Latest Blog Posts = 3 Most recent mini-projects I've completed.
- Portfolio = A collection of projects or galleries of my best work.
And the best part of this is, that as I add new content, you'll always be presented with the latest from my home page. Even if I add a new image to my collection of renderings within my portfolio, the project cover will change, and you'll know that there's something worth looking at!
