One of the most important studies in the recent history of dental sleep medicine, orofacial pain, and temporomandibular disorders has been published!

Main conclusions of the study: The utilization of bruxism episode index (BEI) alone appears to lack correlation and predictive usefulness in assessing masticatory muscle pain intensity in subjects with sleep bruxism (SB). Clinicians should exercise caution in misusing BEI to evaluate the correlation between the severity of SB, specifically harm-related aspects, and masticatory muscle pain intensity. Novel research should be initiated to develop a new reliable index that will correlate with the clinical parameters.

The authors of the publication come from 8 countries on 4 continents. The authors list includes: prof. Mieszko Wieckiewicz, prof. Helena Martynowicz, prof. Gilles Lavigne, prof. Takafumi Kato, prof. Frank Lobbezoo, dr Joanna Smardz, prof. Jari Ahlberg, prof. Efraim Winocur, prof. Alona Emodi-Perlman, prof. Claudia Restrepo, dr Anna Wojakowska, prof. Pawe? Gac, prof. Grzegorz Mazur, dr hab. Marta Waliszewska-Prosol, dr Witold Swienc, and prof. Daniele Manfredini.

The study was conducted between 2017 and 2022 at the Wroclaw Medical University. The study involved 220 adults who underwent a specialist dental examination in accordance with the DC/TMD guidelines and polysomnography. Then, over a year of analysis of the data collected during the study, their interpretation and preparation of the manuscript took place, which was finally published in the Journal of Sleep Research on August 12, 2024. It is the official journal of the European Sleep Research Society. Outstanding scientists (who are on the list of authors) from different countries helped in the analysis of the collected data, their interpretation and preparation of the manuscript.
