??PLAYERS DEVELOPMENT INNOVATION : MOTOR PREFERENCES??

?? As a youth coach I'm always looking to help my student athletes get the most out of their formative years especially while we are creating the fundamental foundation of a baseball player / athlete.

We as a coaching staff aim to cater to each individual athlete and not try to create a one size fits all model or method but rather take the athletes ques and use the guidelines of baseball iq and necessities of the game to help promote the best outcome for each individual player. In this particular case, we had an Athlete "Mikey" Morrison who is above his age of play with acumen and physicality. That said, we did come to a crossroads with his swing in noticing that he was losing velocity and accuracy in his bat path. We all go through slumps but this wasn't a slump. I was trying to identify what was leading to the shift in power and started looking at the kinetic attributes but was at a standstill.

Through my connections on Linkedin, I read a post by Matthew Swope AHC at Maryland University and was following the shift in success that their team underwent as a whole at the plate. Their numbers went from lackluster to Top in the nation in what seemed to be overnight. As I looked into the various posts on their success I came across Coach David in a mention to their hitting shift. At that point, I began my due diligence to find out what his methods were and try to understand how he was able to have such an impact. I saw a response from Coach David in the comments and decided to go out on a limb to request his services, assuming that he may not have an interest in a youth player. Much to my suprise, Coach not only was more than willing to help but he delivered results in a very timely fashion. After exchanging some quick dialogue with coach, he requested that I film my athlete and share so he could assess my mentioned objectives and pain points that I was trying to solve for. I shared the videos with coach while we were at practice and by the time we were packing up, I had a full assessment that was beyond anything I've received as feedback in my years of play and coaching. I had to do my homework to understand what he was seeing and when I did that's when my wheels started turning.

Based off of Coach David's detailed and interict recommendations, we had a solution that yielded results in one week. The teachings not only helped with the hitting aspect but I attribute the work out patterns to the success the athlete had as a catcher in the last half of our season as well. His BA and QAB increased from 301BA to an end of season 405 BA. He threw out 8 runners at second base playing up at the 11U/12U USSSA State Championship Tournament here in Colorado leading the team into a second place finish as the youngest player on the team (10 yrs old).

In conclusion, I want to thank Coach David for taking the time to help our youth athlete and going beyond just solving a problem but also coaching me as a coach. It's rare that you get a consultative approach from someone as skilled as Coach David. I only hope to stay in touch and have the opportunity to continue working with him throughout the years. His new endeavor is going to be very exciting and I can't wait to watch the Scientist take that game we all love into new heights. Continuous learning is why I love the game so much and Coach David has certainly helped me to be better as well as my athlete.
