One month at Zyro: what I expected and what I got here
Exactly a month ago, I wrote that a new stage in my career was beginning, which is like a new chapter in a book. So it’s been a month that has actually passed very quickly. Before that, in the place where I worked for quite a long time, where I started as a trainee, so it was my first exit from work and coming to a new one. I am glad that this experience was a success. I would be lying if I said there was no fear. It goes without saying that the fear was, after all, it’s a whole new place, new people, a different field of activity, a different job, etc., so I didn’t really know what to expect.
Although a month has passed with Zyro, the whole story can be started even earlier ?? More than a year ago, I had already applied for this position, but I did not meet their requirements at that time. Although at that time, the explanation, in my opinion, was not good (I didn't agree with it), but you can't look back and have to move forward. Maybe I changed myself, or maybe the company changed, but this time I got their interest. ??
Let’s start all over again ?? One day, I just got a message On LinkedIn from the current manager asking how I am and whether I would like to talk. I had a lot of activities at that time, but that wasn’t a big deal either; they had time to talk, and after almost a month, when others probably wouldn’t really wait that long. The whole recruitment process was really fun as it gave me the opportunity to self-assess whether I like the place, such as interviewing not only with the manager but also with colleagues. So, the interview is done and the decision is made - we move on. We agreed that after leaving work, I want to rest for a while and that was ok for them because it is important to have a work-life balance.
Well, the wait for the first day of work begins ... And one day, I got an invitation to participate in OKR. You don’t even work yet, and they’re already trying to get you involved so you understand how things are going and not stay away ?? And where else are small gifts for OKR, like Jerky, a duck in the bathroom, or Tamagochi (I haven’t had it in a very long time). Before the first day, there is another equipment meeting where you feel like a child in a candy store. Need a keyboard? Take it. Need a monitor? Here it is. What else do you need?
Well, the first day of work, it all starts later, after all, no extra stress is needed ?? The HR helps you make all the necessary initial steps to start the day, then you get your buddy who tells you what you should know. All the information you need to do in your first days is listed in one place, and you don’t have to ask what you should do next because all the instructions are ready. Just great ?? When performing tasks to get acquainted with different areas of the company. The Kitchen Chat, during which you get to know other colleagues, which is especially helpful because you want to know at least one other person, not just your team. This is how the first days go by, at the beginning of which I hoped that absolutely nothing would be clear, and everything here is so detailed that even a newbie has absolutely no questions. What if there are any questions after the first few days? Ping a colleague in a chat, and he will reply to you quickly, and you won’t even have to wait a week to get an e-mail ?
And now about the work itself. I didn’t really know what to expect exactly because I used to work in a different job and spent more time in academia. Glad to see that here you can be as you are t.y. if you are not the best programmer, you have a chance to learn it. Stuck somewhere and don't know how to fix the problem? Call your colleagues, look with them, and they will always help you. What if you have new ideas? Please try them, you need to move forward with your ideas. And if you come up with a good idea, no one else will take it for yourself, and it will remain yours. You are the person who will receive recognition for it and that was something I needed ??. In fact, the opportunities for improvement here seem limitless, starting with improvement in certain work, attending conferences (4 conferences are planned for this year). And if you want to write an article just go for it and realize yourself if you want to. It’s especially fun when you plan your work at the beginning of each week and look at them at the end of the week, what you managed to do, or maybe something and not. And if one day was not as productive as you might have planned, everything is fine with that, because not everyone has such productive days. It’s also fun that you’re in charge of a particular job from day one, in which case you don’t feel on the sidelines, and all the more don’t feel like a newbie because you have a particular area of your own. Oh, I barely forgot... Team-building programming task, which was also was exciting. P.S. never take too complicated from the beginning ;)
As I said, it’s even weird how the first month went by so quickly, but maybe you should be guided by the fact that when you like a job, you don’t count the time and don’t even feel how fast it can go.
