One mistake many Electrical Engineers make trying to improve their English Communication Skills and how to fix it!

After speaking to many dedicated Electrical Engineers who are eager to improve their English communication skills, I noticed a pattern with many of them I spoke to.

Many of them told me very similar things when it came to what they had tried in the past, and what they are doing now to improve their English communication skills.

Many of them told me they:

  • Watched countless videos in English on Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube etc.
  • Read a vast number of language books or grammar books in English.
  • Complete language courses to improve their general English.

They would do all these methods, but still have significant challenges with their communication skills. All of these types of methods are useful for improving your English as a language. But they are not the most effective methods for improving specific communication skills. They do not target specific communication skills you would want to improve. In other words they don't focus on solving the specific problems.

One analogy you can use is this; you discover you have a deficiency of vitamin C in your body. You decide to take multivitamin tablets to improve your vitamin C levels. After taking multivitamin tablets for some time, you find out that the vitamin C levels in your body have only slightly improved. But you're still deficient. Subsequently you decide to take vitamin C tablets and observe that your levels have improved dramatically.

Improving your English communication skills works in the same way. If you are going to do a variety of methods as described above, you will only see some minor improvements in your English communication skills. You need to make sure you focus on solving the problems, and not just doing all the methods shown above. That won't solve the roots of the problems, leaving you frustrated and wasting a lot of time.

Here are 3 steps you need to do to improve your English communication skills:

1. Develop your foundations

  • Focus on learning relevant phrasal verbs, idioms and expressions.
  • Build your Electrical Engineering vocabulary for your job.
  • Put your newly learned vocabulary into practice right away.?

2. Enhance your verbal communication skills

  • Improve your speaking clarity and intonation.
  • Learn how to listen to different accents from around the world.
  • Learn how to be confident in different scenarios.

3. Excel your writing skills

  • Utilise the vocabulary learned in step 1.
  • Learn how to write professionally to colleagues and clients via emails.
  • Evolve your report writing skills to much higher standards than ever before .?

After completing the steps above, you will notice your English communication skills will seriously improve. Enabling you to improve your job performance and accelerate your career progression as an Electrical Engineer.
