One Man's Throw-back...

I fell in love with baseball and the New York Yankees during the 1981 World Series (yeah, yeah...we lost to LA in six, I get it!). I began donning pinstripes and other 'NY' gear immediately. Family vacations took us to Cincinnati where we would soak in a Reds game or two, so I followed the Reds as well, and had home and road jerseys for them as well.

I always loved the uniforms in that era. I even added an old Montreal Expos jersey to my collection a couple of years ago, because I always loved their logo and uni's. Honestly, I hate the uniforms of today--solid colored jerseys with white or gray pants? What's up with that? That's what you wear for BP, not games, right! Of course, my Yankees have stayed true to the ole pinstripes at home and the block-lettered "New York" for the gray road uni's. It's odd how influenced you are by what was prevelant during that 'crush' phase where you started following the game. I read an article recently in Entrepreneur about a company called Ebbets Field Flannels. They make replicas of the cotton, baggy throw-back uniforms because their owner hated the uniforms from the 70's and 80's. This was so ironic to me, because I hated those old baggy uniforms. Actually, I felt sorry for the players for having to wear those scratchy, puffy things. The uni's of the 80's were cool...Cincinnati's classic 'C' pullover with the player's # on the other pec was great. Others were cool,too...the Expos...the Dodgers, etc. Now, Ebbets Field Flannels sells all matters of throw back uniforms. Below is a pic of a 1953 road jersey from the Knoxville Smokies and #37 Jim Tugerson, who set a league record with 31 wins. It's great how you can take an aspect of such an avid interest and build a complete new brand around it. I may not like those throw back 'looks', but keep up the good work Ebbets Field Flannels, just don't knock my 80's jersey's too hard!
