One Leg at at Time

I love to read about new ideas or dig into a book about complex concepts for healing and transformation but sometimes the most effective messages come from the most mundane places.
I have a pair of pants that have "One Leg at a Time" printed on the inside waistline. First of all, there are days where I feel like I really do need this level of instruction. Metaphorically speaking there are very few areas in my life, if any, where this isn't applicable advice.
In working with clients in recovery, I really believe taking things a step at a time?is one of their biggest challenges as the inclination is to look way ahead past the present moment. Most people entering treatment are looking for the end of their program and asking about the transition plan before they've even begun.
Program development can be the same way. I get really excited about an idea or ideas and then start thinking about results before I've even discussed it with my team. This is when the pants come in handy... Slow down. One leg at a time.
That's the best advice I can give to anyone engaged in a change process of any kind. Be where you are and be there fully. There are insights and information in the moment that should not be sacrificed or overlooked due to haste. For me, many of those insights have shown up again and again but at depths much greater than I had initially perceived. If you stay in the moment and present with where you are, the ground comes to meet you and you may even find that you're already a leg up.
