This One Inescapable Principle

Newton's first law of motion states "An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."

Science isn't too far off from other areas of life, is it?

Similar to Newton's first law of motion, our lives are constantly in motion.

This one inescapable principle haunts me...

"Each of us are constantly being developed whether we like it or not."

We're either becoming more and more like the person we resist or more and more like the person we want to become.

Here's what I've learned about "Principles". Some of this I learned from leadership guru, @AndyStanley.

A principle is not a rule that you follow. A principle follows you. Even when you are unaware of it, it is still true. A principle applies itself to you even when you’re not aware of it. Principles are not laws or rules that you can break… but if you ignore certain principles, principles can break you.

Story: Being a sales trainer I meet with a lot of CEO's. Some our more convinced of this 'Inescapable Principle' than others. Some believe because their employees are constantly being developed, it makes sense to put together a development plan. Others believe development happens organically and to invest in development would be an expense rather than an investment.

Which one are you?

Here's something I read the other day and found it to hit home....

CFO says to CEO, "What if we spend money on our people for their development but they end up leaving our company?"

CEO responds to CFO, "What if we don't spend any money on our people's development and they decide to stay?"

QUESTION: When it comes to development... do you see the world more like the CFO or the CEO?

I am definitely with the CEO. People development is crucial to your business. My theory is develop them enough that they can leave for better pastures, but treat them well enough that they stay.
