One hundred calories, that’s all it takes.
Recently I was talking to a client about the fact that she had stopped losing weight. She was bewildered because in her words: ”She was only doing the same thing that had helped her lose weight”. When she started producing her plan, she decided that she would keep a food diary and she has continued to do that ever since. I also do this as part of my weight loss plan because it means I take responsibility. I notice when it is all starting to go off-course. This does not always mean I take any action straight away, but it does mean that I am aware and making choices. Some of my clients never keep a food diary and one devised three days food and she chooses one each day. If she wants to substitute, she calculates this change. It does mean she has very little spontaneity in her day-to-day eating, but it works for her.
During our conversation I said that I had read somewhere that if you eat 100 calories a day more than you need, in a year you will gain a stone. Yes, a whole stone. It creeps up when you are sleeping and hey presto, another stone. So, the balance is quite slight, because if you want to eat 100 calories you could have: less than ? a Mars bar, less than 1? Weetabix (without anything else), 2 handfuls of grapes. Green are very slightly lower calories than black. (I always think you have to be careful with this kind of measurement if you have large hands). So, 100 calories is not much and it is easy to eat up almost as a snack and, worse still, forget you have eaten these extra calories.
My client said she was going to compare her last week’s food diary with one a couple of months ago. Later she rang me, very excited because she had made the comparison and realised that she had stopped measuring some things—milk in her cereals and the pasta she ate and Bingo! she had discovered why she had stopped losing weight. We are meeting again this week and I’m looking forward to hearing her news because, whether she has lost weight or not, she now has the solution available for her to choose.
Remember, if you eat 100 calories less than you need you’ll lose a stone in a year.
