The One Habit I Can't Change...

The One Habit I Can't Change...

Alright, bear with me here...

I was listening to an audio book?? the other day....

**Complete squirrel moment, but do you prefer audio books or paper books?**

Obviously, I digress.

Ok, we are back! So, I was listening to an audio book the other day and the author said that their children were trying to explain this phenomenon that happens to them in the shower and it went something like this.

(Not the actual transcript...just fyi.)

Kid 1: "Do you know why I get the best ideas in the shower?"

Kid 2: "Me too! It's like my head gets flooded with things to think about and I figure out stuff all the time!"

Kid 1: "I don't know why it happens. Do you?"

Parent: "Yes, yes I do. The shower is the one place in your world where you are not plugged in to a TV, a phone, a computer, someone else in a conversation, or idly playing a game. We want to occupy our minds every waking moment. But in the shower? Your mind is free."

??????

And those last two sentences struck a cord.

"But in the shower? Your mind is free."

Lightbulb moment on why one of my favorite habits benefits my life so much!

So what's my handy-dandy go-to?

I try to take time for reflection on the week, what I could do better next week and what I am proud of myself and my team for handling with grace and ease. I go somewhere quiet and just sit with a notepad and a pen.??

Sometimes it stresses me out to think about doing it when I have so much else on my plate, if I'm honest... But at the end of the day? It sets my mind free and inspiration and solid reasoning often follow.

How do you actually #listen to yourself? Meditation? Following your breath? Sitting with nature? What works for you?

Whatever that is...find it, utilize it and discipline yourself to the practice.

Challenge yourself: In two weeks, check back in and tell me if you took the time to clear out the mental noise and how you made it work for you!

Awesome article, Erin Westrich!! That is SO true. I think that a lot of the time the ideas and/or answers we are looking for are RIGHT THERE, but clouded by all the noise that fills our lives (aka cell phones, social media, etc.). BTW, I actually prefer paper books. Nothing beats that book smell ??
