NSW Government and One Giant Leap Australia Foundation announce Aerospace Camp and STEM Careers Expo.

18 January 2023

As part of the New South Wales Government’s Our Region, Our Voice - Regional Youth Investment Program, Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders and One Giant Leap Australia Foundation have announced the inaugural Aerospace Camp program.?

Unique and immersive, Aerospace Camp will provide highly engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and aerospace education to young people in regional New South Wales throughout 2023 and 2024. One Giant Leap Australia Foundation Managing Director, Jackie Carpenter says, “we are so grateful to be given this opportunity for the next 2 years. It enables One Giant Leap Australia Foundation to inspire and support NSW youth in exploring their potential and fulfilling their dreams. The Aerospace Camp program is quite literally ‘out of this world’.”

The Hon Dugald Saunders MP, Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW and Member for Dubbo Electorate said, “space has captivated us for thousands of years, and we’re determined to make sure regional NSW plays a role in our aerospace future”.

“Our region is already home to world-class space infrastructure, from Australia’s first Dark Sky Park – the Warrumbungles National Park – to the famous Parkes Radio Telescope, which played a role in the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon!

“The Aerospace Camp program is quite literally ‘out of this world’ and I hope it helps inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers, entrepreneurs and explorers!”

Over four days and three nights, participants of Aerospace Camp will experience activities that are immersive, interactive, fun. With an underlying emphasis on wellbeing and confidence building, the program also develops future employability skills including team building, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving. The camp program focuses on the key objectives of Our Region Our Voice; Work Ready, Wellbeing, Connectivity and Community.

The program will include;

  • Astronomy and the Australian night sky
  • Australia’s contributions to space exploration
  • The Artemis Missions
  • Habitats on the Moon and Mars
  • Rockets, Rovers, VR, Drones and Robotics
  • So you want to be a rocket scientist?!
  • STEM Careers Expo

In collaboration and cooperation with local schools and community groups,? 32 students aged 12 to 14 will be offered this unique opportunity.? Successful students will be fully accommodated over the four day program.

In 2023, Aerospace Camp will be available in the areas of Mudgee, Kempsey, Goulbourn, Inverell. Then in 2024, the program will extend to the regions of Moree, West Wyalong, Broken Hill and Forster.

Aerospace Camp is a curriculum based program and it will be offered during school terms. The hybrid combination of workshops and presentations by various space experts, combined with associated practical, problem solving scenarios? lead to further skill development. The immersive activities incorporate problem solving, collaboration, design processes and develop youth confidence in themselves. Aerospace Camp participants will find the program relevant and cover current day? issues.

During the four day program, participants will work with and experience technologies such as flight simulators, robotics, drones and virtual reality which they potentially? may not have regular, or any, access to.

The STEM Careers Expo will encourage young people to try new things and achieve their dreams. Presentations by STEM specialists, especially in the space and aerospace fields, provide insight into professionals working in the industry. This event will also increase the awareness of young people and their families around current opportunities and those that will become available into the future as emerging STEM industries further develop across Australia and the world.?

“With the current vision to build habitats on both the Moon and Mars, people usually do not appreciate that all the professions and trades that we have on Earth will also be needed for these new habitats. We need ‘Space Tradies’!” explained Jenna McCarthy, Education Outreach Manager for One Giant Leap Australia Foundation.

By bringing Aerospace Camp and the STEM Careers Expos to regional locations, One Giant Leap Australia Foundation is removing barriers which often hinder the development of STEM skills and the awareness of current and emerging opportunities for young people outside metropolitan areas.

The Our Region, Our Voice - Regional Youth Investment Program was established in June 2022 by the NSW Government to deliver tailored investments and local projects to enhance the lives and wellbeing of regional youth, supporting young people to live their best life and thrive within their local communities. The program is administered by the Office for Regional Youth which is within the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development .
