There is ONE Engineering
Engineering knows no borders
This article is to offer two examples that support its title and also connects the "ONE Engineering" concept to my Candidacy for 2018 President-Elect (2019 President).
I left Poland after receiving my PhD there just before The Solidarity movement started dismantling the communist system in the country. My experience with moving from Europe to the United States in the 1980s demonstrated that there is ONE engineering profession no matter where you go. Since we all "speak the same language of engineering", my transition from the post-doc assignment at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, to the University of Louisville, Kentucky in the US, went smoothly. Furthermore, working for three years in Asia exposed me to non-Western cultures and taught me that the global diversity of engineering and that ONE engineering IEEE is one of its most powerful assets. IEEE offers a common platform to contribute to the profession and to help members advance their careers regardless of their address.
A more recent example in support of ONE Engineering is shown on the pic below. Yesterday, I crossed the US-Canada border between Detroit, MI and Windsor, ONT in a taxi. Frankly, even though I am a seasoned traveler, it never dawned on me that crossing a border in a taxi can happen. I always thought is had to be a border crossing at airports, harbors and that there would have to be some drama part to it. There was no thrill whatsoever with crossing the border this time, and there is nothing to report.
200 yards, one minute further and past the border, I have ended up in the Caesar Hotel. The pic taken from my hotel room on the Canadian shore shows the city of Detroit just across the water. I have arrived here to attend the IEEE Canada Spring 2017 Meeting as a Candidate for IEEE President and to deliver my position statement. I can now say that IEEE has no borders and there is ONE engineering. More to come. #zurada4IEEEpresident
