The One Decision You Need to Make Right Now

The One Decision You Need to Make Right Now

I recently heard someone say:

“The life you’re living today is based on decisions you made 3-5 years ago.”

It really struck me. As I mulled it over, I began reflecting on my life and how radically different it looks today versus a decade ago.?

What decisions did I make to go from?past me: struggling with addiction and mental health issues, grappling with leaving the corporate world and starting my own business and navigating challenging, toxic and unfulfilling relationships to?current me: a person that loves and honors themselves in all their forms, no longer relying on drugs or alcohol to cope, doing work that I love with clients that I love, in a deeply healing relationship, and ultimately living a full and abundant life?

Here are some of the defining decisions I noted:

  • 2009: Made the decision to get sober and get help for mental health issues
  • 2014: Moved out of my small hometown to somewhere with more opportunity
  • 2015: Ended a marriage and embarked on a journey as a single mother
  • 2016: Left my job of over a decade to start my own business
  • 2019: Prioritized my mental health and deep healing work

You might be reflecting on your own journey now, so go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back because you’ve come a long way.?

What are some of the defining decisions you have made? And if you aren’t where you want to be yet, keep reading.?

Inner Knowing

So many people sit around waiting for their circumstances to change in order to actually start living. Or worse yet, they blame their circumstances for putting off the things they truly want to do. As always, there are many valid reasons why we do this. Sometimes, we need to learn or we’re simply not ready. Other times, people are actively being oppressed by inequitable systems.?

But there are also those who have that deep?inner knowing?that something needs to change and have the ability to do so, but the fear of leaving their comfortable, settled and “safe” routine is enough to keep them from doing what they actually want to do. There is nothing wrong with this, but from my own experience and the hundreds of people who have shared their stories with me, there are certain feelings and symptoms that come along with ignoring your?inner knowing, and they’re not comfortable or fun.

I knew it was time to leave my job for a long time before I actually did it. No matter how I justified why I stayed, ultimately it was all fear-based. Legitimate fears of not having enough, not being enough, of failing, and of the Unknown. But my ‘knowing’only grew louder until I had no other choice but to take the leap.?

I liken this to when your phone is ringing, except if you don’t pick up, it just keeps ringing. This internal ringing gets louder, so much so that it begins to affect your health, your sense of self and your relationships. You begrudgingly pick up and often this “call” is something that you’re scared shitless to do. Maybe it’s to end a relationship, to get some overdue help, to quit a job or maybe even to move across the country. So you slam the phone down, but this “calling” will continue until you either choose to walk through the fear or until you take your final breath in this life.

Finding Your Power

There is a real power that comes from walking through fear and doing hard things.

I have lived life as an alcoholic and as a sober person. As a wife and as a single, divorced mother. As an employee and as a business owner. Over time as my roles and identity would shift, I realized these didn’t define me and I was still just me. And there was nothing I could do or not do that would take away my worthiness.?

You are not your job. You are not any of the roles you have taken on. You are not any of the things you do. You are worthy beyond it all.

Accepting this notion opens you up to an interesting new world of endless possibilities.

Leaving behind a role or a part of your identity will require a level of courage you might not even know you have. But the more you do it, the more you will see they’re all simply experiences you are having or have had. And whatever experience you might be having or any role you might be attached to right now is quite alright so long as you remember that you have the power to choose another experience.

This allows us to stop being so attached to who we think we have to be and move into the truth of who we are.

The One Decision

You have the choice to make decisions today that are in service of the life you will be living 3-5 years from now. Logistics and what’s “possible” be damned, consider:

What does that life look like? How would you like to be spending your time??Where would you like to be living? Who do you want around you? What experiences would you like to have?

You don’t have to figure it all out, the one decision you need to make right now is actually quite simple.?

Are you ready to live life fully or not??

JOIN THE DYING PROJECT

It took me years to work on this...and I finally arrived at the understanding that intuition is that very first thought that comes, anything else is the mind interfering which essentially leads to you overthinking something. So now when I find myself going round in circles I think back to the first thought that came and I do that! Works like a charm ??
