One Decision: Can Change Your Life

One Decision: Can Change Your Life

"Wendell" was 29 and at a career standstill. He was working for a non-profit as Compliance Officer, he was miserable. It wasn't the job nor his managers nor the firm, it was him. Wendell didn't like what he was doing, but didn't have any concrete ideas about what he wanted to do. He thought about owning a bar, sports management, some other stuff. But, he never put in the work to do those things. Because until we know where we want to go, we'll run all over the place, culminating in a circle.

Wendell and I met a lot about his career goals (what we want to do) and his career values (who we are, no matter where we work). We made a list of career values that were important to Wendell: Autonomy, changing lives, doing different things each week, flexibility, accountability for work done, money.

A major professional conference was coming up, about 4 hour drive away. Based on our conversations, I told Wendell he should go. Wendell didn't really want to. But, he did because nothing else was working out for him.

As he was driving to the conference, Wendell wanted to turn around. It started raining really hard, making the drive even harder. Wendell hated every mile. He said he could hear my voice telling him, "Nothing will change until you change." So he kept going.

Long story short: At the Conference, he met the right people at the right time and was hired 6 weeks later. He went from making about $65,000 to making $160,000 ($110,000 base + $50,000 bonus). He has autonomy, he's accountable for his performance, he's meeting new people every week and he's very happy professionally.

Radical professional change requires radical mindset change. We won't change circumstances until our mindset changes, first. You can do this, you are worth it.
