One CEO gives his advice on seizing opportunity
It’s never too late for a major change in your career. Just ask Graham G. Lumsden, who left Merck after 26 years to pursue other passions.
We spoke to him as part of our CEO Leadership Series to learn why he left Merck and how he’s found success as Motif’s CEO…
“I realized that 26 years was quite a long time and that I wanted to be in a more entrepreneurial role and environment. I’d had enough of “big pharma,” which was becoming overloaded with committees and multiple layers of decision-making, in my opinion. But at Motif, I’m able to thoroughly analyze a situation, make a decision and act on it very quickly.”

In Dr. Lumsden’s time at Merck, he moved through a number of different roles. A veterinarian by training, he held progressively responsible marketing positions with Merck AgVet before moving into the human health side of the business.
It was there that he ultimately became Merck’s Worldwide Business Leader. In our interview, he reflected on how that experience was instrumental in his success at Motif.
“There’s no way I could do what I’m doing today without having completed a diverse 26 years at Merck. It was phenomenal training for me and it was absolutely the right foundation for what I am doing now.”
