One of the biggest career mistakes

One of the biggest career mistakes

Whose responsibility is it to manage your career – your manager or you?

I used to think it was my manager’s.

  • I believed they were responsible for recognising my talent and putting me forward for opportunities.
  • I believed they were responsible for ensuring that the senior leaders were aware of my contribution and abilities.
  • I put my professional reputation and my future in someone else’s hands. ??

And I’m not alone.

One of the biggest mistakes made by many professionals is leaving it up to their boss to promote their successes with the leaders and decisions makers.

Yes, you need people who will advocate for you in the workplace, and I talk about that a lot, but…

YOUR CAREER IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

  • It’s up to you to ensure the decision makers in your company, or in your industry, know you and your capabilities.
  • It’s up to you to make sure people know what you want and how they can help you.
  • It’s up to you to manage your reputation and the direction you want your career to take.

If you’re currently leaving your future in the hands of someone else, it’s time to take back control.

Ask yourself:

  • What do you want to achieve over the next few years and who needs to know about it?
  • What are your greatest achievements and do the right people know?
  • What actions can you take to grow your reputation with the people who matter?

Start taking action to Create A Career You Love.
