ONDC: The game changer of E-Commerce

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an initiative of the government Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), aims to have an open network where goods and services can be exchanged through digital or electronic networks.

ONDC is going to serve as a boon and potential game-changing model for the e-commerce industry, as it will create an equal platform for all buyers and sellers.?

The normal business scenario on portals is not the same, different portals have different rules that need to be followed for selling products and services.

ONDC will disrupt the market that has been majorly dominated by Amazon and Flipkart and make a platform that has the same rules and regulations for all. This will give the smaller sellers and newcomers a chance to boost their sales and be more visible to the customers. This will also help in creating innovation and transformation in the e-commerce industry and will also ensure that monopoly does not take place.

Time and again the government has identified malpractices that are followed by the portals because of the monopoly they have over the market, and thus they use loopholes to gain traction from customers to increase sales, however on the ONDC network malpractices cannot be done as portals and a D2C website will on the same level field.

The platform is set to help both the sellers and the buyers, they can access other players on different platforms through the ONDC application, making it a level playing field for all. One platform’s buyer can buy from all the sellers on the ONDC network.?

ONDC network has on-boarded platforms like Snapdeal and is in talks with Meesho and Google. They have a process to verify genuine sellers and make sure that products and services buyers get are genuine and there are no discrepancies for the same.

The sellers will get a larger pool of buyers and get an even playing field where every seller has to follow the same regulations thus decreasing the chances of any negligence that can happen.

The platform will also be compliant with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and designed for compliance with the emerging Personal Data Protection Bill.

The data of the buyers and sellers are secured; during the purchasing process, the buyer will receive the seller's information and vice versa, thus making sure that there is no breach in data and information and they comply with the data protection bill that the government has recently passed for e-commerce portals.

The main aim is to make the small players get on board on different platforms and create an e-commerce ecosystem where there is equality for all and discrepancies that occur because the monopoly of platforms decreases.?

This should help in the easy adoption of digital means and platforms by smaller businesses and also businesses that have yet not adopted the e-commerce platforms because of the different rules and regulations of different portals.

The main challenge that buyers faced before ONDC was finding the best price for the best product and service and not having options to explore. ONDC aims to resolve this by bringing all the sellers on the same platform for there to be an equal opportunity for all.?

As for the sellers, the main challenge was to find buyers as different buyers prefer different portals; after ONDC as the sellers get consolidated on a single platform they can sell to buyers on different platforms, which in turn would increase the visibility and sales.
