Once You Get It

Has anyone ever talked about a flywheel with you when it comes to business? It's a lesser-used cliche, but definitely a cliche nonetheless. For a long time, I did what I often do when faced with information like this. I smiled politely and parroted other people. "Yeah, flywheel."

Until I watched this video (starting where I've got it cued up to start)

And then, just like that, I really got it.

Once You Get It

I'm working very hard on changing some baseline personality and behavior traits inside myself. For one, I used to speak sarcasm as my primary language (English is my second). For another, I've always been very cautious and wary of people who are super positive all the time. They scare me because often, they seem pretty close to the part of their life arc where they offer me a ladle full of Kool Aid.

But since I made a few changes in my life, I can't deny that there's something to all this positivity / manifestation / law of attraction stuff. Here's the thing, though: do I tell you, knowing you'll shrug it off? Or do I keep it to myself and just benefit from it?

That's a problem to me. I love to share what I learn. I've learned this in POWERFUL ways. It changed my entire life between early 2020 and the beginning of 2021. Like, I'm a completely different person.

The Flywheel Thing in That Video

When Adam Savage says that the power in flywheels scares him, I get that from my point of view with the whole "be positive / manifesting" perspective. The moment I started acting and speaking and framing everything around me in positive ways, the world gave me more of that. The moment I started looking for it (more positive stuff), I saw more of it (like the red car theory).

As I built up more and more positive energy and as I said all the manifesting stuff you're supposed to repeat (Wealth surrounds me, and I'm great at finding opportunities," and on and on), everything in the world just started getting better and better.

BUT HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART

When I Let the Flywheel Slow Down

Negative people slow down the flywheel. Complaints slow it down. Sharing my very positive energy with someone who's negative or complaining slows down my energy through the flywheel. I lose something when I interact with negative elements.

So not only do I have to be positive, work on my very very very powerful brain manifesting stuff, etc, but I have to AVOID people who are negative, avoid any acts of my own that are negative, fight and banish any pessimism at any time, and on and on. I have to choose the kinds of books and movies and music I absorb.

Have you ever been on a health kick and you're doing SO well and you're eating super clean and drinking water and black coffee and all that, and then one day you eat a big giant fat piece of cake because why not? And then the next day or later that day, you feel like a jazzed up and wired and dirty mess? It's like pouring sand in your gas tank.

It turns out that if you let the flywheel slow down for any reason, it mucks up EVERYTHING. Great coworker but boy do they complain? That's a slowdown. Training Day's a great movie BUT it's obviously negative all the way through. Slowdown. You don't get the sale you've been working on and you start to blame someone else, and call yourself stupid in the process? Slowdown.

I have to preserve the flywheel or I won't get the benefits. I have to actively avoid negative people, negative content, negative reactions to life as it unfolds. I have to keep that wheel buzzing faster and faster.

The Fancy People Do It

That's not easy. It's not for everyone. And it's more work that you don't immediately notice is done all the time by people who manifest their success. There are so many ways to make money and be successful, but if you want to do THIS way, the manifesting and stuff, it's all about choosing to hold that Flywheel dear.

Is that what you'll do?

Thank you, for again, making me think about how I look at things and how I react to stuff. Thanks, Chris!

I am one of those positive by nature people (externally). I don't have Kool-Aid to offer anyone but my ability to see positive in my surroundings gets me through my own tasks. If it helps lift someone else, that's good too. ? ?There are times when I am tasked to spend a day with someone who is negative by nature and it is physically exhausting. It does not matter what I say with these people, they have a way of finding something pessimistic to reply. The days I know I have to be present with someone negative are days I have trouble motivating myself upright in the morning. (I love mornings and don't need an alarm to wake and rise.) ? ? It's difficult to return to momentum when the energy drain is unavoidable. Now I have an engineering challenge: insulating my inner flywheel better against external pressure to slow.

As we celebrate the fourth anniversary of my little digital marketing agency in a few weeks, I have to say I've fine-tuned my manifestation abilities with enthusiasm, accountability, and community. Those three elements, combined with a crystal clear vision of where you want to go, are magic.

I love the flywheel concept. I think it's so on the nose for business. Here it is for Apple: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/03/technology/apple-3-trillion-market-value.html And, here is a different scale with Justin Welsh: https://twitter.com/JustinSaaS/status/1482035574152347653?s=20
