2. GROWING THE GRASS FOR THE WORLD CUP. AURORA ALMENDRAL

An overhead shot of the pitch and players from the game between France and England in the World Cup in Qatar

"The perfect grass for a soccer field is deep green and sharply striped, and mowed to the exact length—23mm—for optimal speed of play for the ball. Beyond that, features may vary. It takes teams of expert agronomists years of research and testing to determine the right grass for a World Cup stadium’s conditions. This year, the grass that won the World Cup contract is called PlatinumTE Paspalum, grown by a Georgia-based company called Atlas Turf International."

A Black woman in a white fleecy top and blue jeans looks at the camera

"Mecca Patterson-Guridy wants to learn, but for some subjects, she isn’t always comfortable asking her teachers. So she has been turning to TikTok. Online, the 17-year-old high school junior in Philadelphia has found videos on social media platforms about protests over police shootings, civic engagement and Black and Latino history in the U.S. The accounts she checks regularly feature segments including “Fast Black History” and “Black Girl Magic Minute.” The videos, Mecca said, address “things that get overlooked in the classroom.”

4. 32 WEIRD SPORTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. ALEX LAYBOURNE

Two men laying barefoot on the ground opposite one another with their toes interlocked wrestling

"There are a great many weird sports in this world, and rightly so. Weird sports, much like any of the more mainstream cousins, are all defined by the same base logic. A sport is defined as an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Within that, the term “athletic” is malleable and open to interpretation. However, with that definition and the simple fact that there are 8 billion people in the world, spread over 195 countries and several thousand cultures, it is not surprising that there are so many weird sports being practiced."
