Once a Week Episode #243

1. THE RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD'S FAIRS. GRANT WONG

An image of people attending the world fair in Seattle in 1962. In the background is the Seattle Space Needle.

"Sixty years ago, the “World of Tomorrow” was born. On April 21, 1962, the city of Seattle opened its very own world’s fair: the Century 21 Exposition. Spanning 74 acres in the urban heart of Washington, the celebration of human ingenuity arrived at a pivotal point in American history, at the height of the Cold War and the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Greeted by the newly constructed Space Needle—a towering symbol of the U.S.’ outer space ambitions—visitors wandered through dozens of exhibitions and pavilions featuring the latest and greatest in American technology and entertainment. They gawked at prototype cars like General Motors’ Firebird III; admired paintings by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Renoir; and rode on a 95-foot-tall Ferris wheel to get a sky-high view of the fairgrounds."

2. I LIVED THE #VANLIFE. IT WASN'T PRETTY. CAITY WEAVER

3. ANNOUNCING MICROSOFT WOK (ENVIRONMENTAL EDITION). NATE BERG

A chef is in a commercial kitchen cooking with a wok.

"Microsoft has a bold new release. It was years in development and required all the beta testing and version tweaks one would expect of a hot new app or software package. But this new product is no app. It’s a wok. Yes, one of the world’s leading technology companies has spent the past two years developing a new way to stir-fry. And though that might sound low-tech and perhaps low-priority, it’s actually part of a radical rethinking of how kitchens operate."

4. PUBLIC ART DECREASES TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. ELAINE VELIE

A highway off ramp is covered in beautiful floral paintings.

5. JUST FOR FUN. EVEN MORE CONFUSING TIMES. BURGER KING

A new ad from Burger King launching their plant-based chicken nuggets. A really clever ad spot with killer lines like this. "Frederick wants to leave a better world for his children, but he'd have to have children - which experts say is the least sustainable thing for the planet."?
