A Once in a Lifetime Event - Support Thousands of People by Giving Away Wheelchairs & Exploring San Francisco Bay!

Today I am announcing an amazing event coming up that supports two non-profit groups that I am personally engaged with. I sincerely hope that some of you will find it in your hearts to participate in this event and thereby help these two worthy organizations.

First is Chair The Hope. This group is run by an incredible couple who I have become good friends with, Nathan and Heather Ogden. In short, many years ago, Nathan, an energetic, happily married, father of two,?suffered two separate neck breaks in a 14 month period. The first break, on a ski slope, left Nathan paralyzed from the waist down. The second neck break occurred when Nathan had come down with pneumonia, went unconscious in his sleep and was rushed to a nearby hospital. While receiving x-rays, incredibly his limp body fell off the gurney and he suffered the second devastating neck break with even greater neurological damage. These two crippling incidents left Nathan a quadriplegic who will likely be needing a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Fast forward to the Summer of 2017, when Heather, Nathan’s amazing wife, determined that the Ogden family would do something to make a positive difference in other’s lives. That germ of an idea blossomed into a 1,200-mile family (now with four children ages 10 - 18) bicycle trek from Mt. Bachelor, Oregon, where Nathan had his first accident, to the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, to prove that people can in fact do hard things. They did this to raise money to be able to buy wheelchairs and give them to those who need them but cannot afford them.

To date, they have given away over 3,100 wheelchairs to people living in the US, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Ghana, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and more! And, to be sure, statistics show that when someone is given a wheelchair, on average, 7 people are benefited - including loved ones, care givers, friends, etc. - not the just the individual themselves. So, from one man's challenging journey, over 21,000 people around the world are today better off given what they do.

The USS Potomac on San Francisco Bay, near Angel Island

The second non-profit that I support is the USS Potomac. This is President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Presidential Yacht. This ship was built in 1934 as the Coast Guard cutter Electra. The 165-foot vessel was commissioned as a U.S. Navy vessel in 1936, renamed the USS Potomac, and served as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Presidential Yacht until his death in 1945. The USS Potomac replaced the wooden USS Sequoia which was deemed unsafe for the President, in part because he was wheelchair bound and the risk of a fire on the wooden Sequoia would leave the President in grave danger. So, on December 9, 1935, Sequoia was officially reassigned to the Secretary of the Navy and the steel-hulled USS Potomac was designated as the new presidential yacht.

Fast forwarding to today, Chair The Hope is hosting a fundraiser event aboard this incredible ship. The event, which includes hor d'oeuvres, drinks and a 3 1/2 hour San Francisco Bay cruise, will be taking place on November 6th, leaving Jack London Square in Oakland, CA.
