Onboarding Edition
Have you heard the term "onboarding your employees"?
Do you think one of these things when you hear that you need to properly onboard your new hire?
I'd like to walk through each of these comments and provide clarity for you.
1. That's for a big corporation.
Onboarding your new hire must happen whether you are hiring your first employee or you are hiring your 100th employee. The way you bring someone onboard is going to demonstrate just what type of employer you are and what type of culture you have. A month ago I wrote an article on whether or not a small business really needs human resources, and I debunked the myth that HR only belongs in corporate conglomerates. You can read more about that here.
2. Onboarding belongs on a ship.
Just because a term is heard more commonly somewhere else and becomes relatable to that situation, doesn't mean it doesn't belong in a small business. Onboarding is a very common term in human resources and every business leader should be award of this term, what it means and why it's needed. That leads us to the third point...
3. I don't even know what onboarding means.
That's fair. If you aren't a human resources professional, you may not have heard this term before. Here is a brief description:
Onboarding starts at the moment an offer is accepted. The new hire needs to know what to expect before and when they arrive on their first day. But it doesn't stop there. It continues through the first day including things like office/shop/worksite tours, introductions, workspace information, safety and employee orientations on policies and workplace practices, etc. And it doesn't stop there! They will continue to experience onboarding as they are trained on the job on the workings of the organization. This can last up to three months of the new hire's employment.
4. Onboarding is just a fancy word for orientation.
You may think this because the orientation is very connected to the first day of employment, but as you can see by the answer to #3 above, the orientation is just one component of onboarding.
5. There is no time for that, we need our employee's working immediately.
If you were about to take off in a plane and you found out that the pilot just started working for the airline that day and wasn't trained on things like this new runway, this different plane and the way the airline does things, would you trust that they'll figure it out, or would you be more comfortable knowing that the airline took the time to get them acclimatized and trained on the way they do things?
Whether you have a very experienced new hire or this is their first job, going through the inner-workings of your organization is very important.
If you haven't incorporated onboarding into your business, I would like to suggest that you start now.
