Overcoming public sector challenges for skills, training and retention
The public sector has a lot of key challenges to address when it comes to employee engagement, motivation and retaining its brightest stars.
In July 2024, the annual total earnings growth for the public sector was 2.4% compared to 4.8% in the private sector. Pay isn't the only issue.
Substantial staff shortages are also causing problems, 52% of employers in the public sector are struggling with hard-to-fill vacancies. This means that remaining employees are feeling the pressure of picking up extra demands and duties to fill the gap.
While investing in online learning won't solve all the issues facing the sector, it has a large part to play in staff motivation, upskilling and retention.

Here are our top three recommended strategies
Self-directed learning allows individuals take control of their own learning journey, this is particularly appealing to those looking to advance in their careers and high flyers.
These learners often feel empowered to take initiative and responsibility for their own training, boosting motivation and their own skills as they complete training and quickly acquire new knowledge to meet emerging trends.
These motivated and disciplined individuals are highly valuable for organisations as their adaptability and drive makes them shine. However, they must be nurtured and supported to avoid burnout and high turnover rates.

2. Smoothing digital transformation and learning in the flow of work
Investing in digital adoption platforms (DAPs) to help learning in the flow of work can be particularly relevant for public sector organisations who are undergoing digital transformation programmes.
Digital adoption platforms like Omniplex Guide can aid users in quickly getting to grips with their latest business software by offering helpful step-by-step guidance, all within their chosen app as they move through work processes.
Learning in the flow of work helps learners to quickly obtain knowledge and reduce errors leading to boosted productivity and motivation.

3. Focusing on career development
Competing with the private sector on pay and salary may be a difficulty when attracting and retaining staff. But, pay isn't the only factor that employees consider.
Employees are more likely to stay within an organisation that offers them opportunities for growth and routinely gives them chances to keep their skills updated inline with the latest market trends.
The public sector can focus on its strengths by concentrating on job security, training and qualifications that will set its people up for future successes.
Digital learning is a great way to achieve this and platforms like Good e-Learning enable users to supercharge their careers with a range of online professional courses. Check it out here.
