Our expert tips for identifying and managing skills gaps
A recent study found that by 2030, 20% of the entire UK labour market could be under-skilled for the requirements of their role.
When designing systems training, it's useful to consider the specific skills and areas of development for each member of your team, always ensuring that their knowledge is growing to reflect technological changes and industry demands.
Ask yourself questions like "Are they up-to-date with our latest software and business processes?" and "Did their onboarding cover the essential knowledge they need to excel in their role or do they need a refresh?"
Skill gaps could include soft skills gaps such as communication and problem solving capabilities as well as more technical skills such as knowledge of a specific tool such as Articulate 360 or Salesforce.
Check out our top 3 tips below for conducting an effective skills gap analysis for your team
The first step in the process is to assess how the skills of your team will support the overall goals of the business.
Reviewing long-term objectives such as market expansion or product development can help you decide what skills are needed for success in these areas. Goals should always be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound) as well as being mindful of any emerging trends or new tech. For example, is AI becoming a hot topic in your industry? Include AI proficiency within team development goals.
2. Assess current skills
Next, access current skill levels within your team. This process involves a thorough evaluation of the existing capabilities within the workforce. There a number of ways to do this which may include... surveys, performance reviews or skill assessment tools. This is an excellent way of building a detailed inventory of skills, qualifications and and experiences of each individual.
3. Find the gaps
For each role within your team, list the skills and competencies that are crucial for effective performance. This could include technical skills specific to the role but also soft skills like communication. For example, a manager will likely need influencing and leadership skills. Compare these skills with the necessary ones required for the role to quickly identify gaps.

How can a digital adoption solution help you accelerate systems training success?
A digital adoption solution may be an answer to simplifying your systems training processes.
What is a digital adoption solution?
A digital adoption solution (DAS) is a piece of software that overlays another piece of software with helpful content in real-time. It enables you to add support and guidance for users with the aim of accelerating adoption and onboarding of the software.
For example, if your organisation is making a change to a brand-new software like Salesforce or SAP, you could overlay helpful hints and guides to support your team through key processes.
How can a digital adoption solution speed up systems training?
A DAS is an incredibly useful tool to use in the creation and delivery of systems training. Tools like Guide Workflow Assistant make the process more efficient and offer a better user experience for your learners.
What are the benefits of Guide Workflow Assistant?
2. User-friendly: Features like the automatic step recording tool and seamless integration provide an intuitive interface and make GWA easy to use. No technical know-how needed.
3. Improved user proficiency: By creating easy-to-follow guides using GWA's step recording software, learning and support is more accessible to a wider audience of learners.
