This week's latest news in the field of Omics:

German Injunction Against NanoString CosMx Spatial Genomics Products Lifted

Bruker announced that the injunction against the sale of its NanoString CosMx Spatial Molecular Imager products in Germany has been lifted. Effective immediately, CosMx products are available in Germany after Bruker posted a bond to suspend the injunction, authorized by the Munich Higher Regional Court.

A year ago, a lower court granted 10x Genomics a permanent injunction against NanoString, preventing sales of CosMx in Germany due to a patent dispute. This was followed by a preliminary injunction from the European Unified Patent Court, barring sales in 16 European countries, which was overturned earlier this year.

In May, Bruker acquired NanoString for approximately $393 million after NanoString’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The German Federal Patent Court invalidated 10x Genomics' European Patent No. 2794928B1 in May. The Munich Higher Regional Court then allowed the injunction to be lifted upon bond payment, citing overlooked aspects in the lower court’s decision.

Qiagen to Lay off 175 Workers, Close NeuMoDx Michigan Site

Qiagen will lay off approximately 175 employees from its NeuMoDx PCR testing business over the next year as it closes the Ann Arbor, Michigan, manufacturing site. This follows a Michigan state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing. The layoffs were expected after Qiagen announced in June that it was discontinuing the NeuMoDx business due to changing customer needs.

NeuMoDx includes the NeuMoDx 96 and 288 test systems and over 15 CE-IVD-marked and two FDA-cleared infectious disease assays. Qiagen acquired NeuMoDx in September 2020 for $248 million. The layoffs will occur in stages through November 2025. Qiagen will support affected employees and help existing customers transition to other solutions until 2025.

Qiagen expects a pretax restructuring charge of approximately $400 million due to the closure, with $300 million in noncash charges recognized mainly in Q2 2024. Qiagen reaffirmed its Q2 net sales outlook of at least $495 million at constant exchange rates and adjusted diluted EPS of $.52 CER. Shares of Qiagen were flat at $42.47 in midmorning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Integrated DNA Technologies Licenses CRISPR Off-Target Detection Technology From SeQure Dx

Danaher subsidiary Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) announced a licensing agreement with SeQure Dx for off-target analysis of CRISPR genome editing in therapeutics development. Under the agreement, IDT will offer off-target analysis using SeQure Dx's GUIDE-seq technology to preclinical and clinical gene modification customers. Financial details were not disclosed.

"Off-target effects remain a primary concern in genome editing and are not fully understood," said Sandy Ottensmann, VP at IDT. With more CRISPR-based therapeutics in trials, safer and more efficient genome-editing platforms are crucial. IDT's expanded off-target analysis aims to support cell and gene therapy developers moving to clinical trials.

SeQure Dx Founder Keith Joung developed GUIDE-seq at Massachusetts General Hospital, publishing the method in 2015. SeQure Dx also partners with KromaTid and Synthego for off-target analysis services for CRISPR-based therapeutics developers.

Inocras and Watchmaker Genomics Announce Strategic Collaboration in Genomic Innovation

Inocras, an innovator in whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics, and Watchmaker Genomics, an expert in genomic tool development, have expanded their partnership to deliver solutions for accelerating insights for patients and researchers. Earlier this year, Inocras launched the CancerVision assay, utilizing target enhanced whole genome sequencing (TE-WGS) for comprehensive solid tumor analysis.

The CancerVision assay improves somatic variant detection accuracy with over 99% sensitivity for single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and insertions/deletions (indels). Inocras chose the Watchmaker DNA Library Prep Kits for high efficiency and sequence accuracy with challenging tissues.

“Our collaboration with Watchmaker has been crucial in driving innovation,” said Stephanie Ferguson, Inocras’s Chief Clinical Operations Officer. Kerri Stellato, Chief Commercial Officer at Watchmaker, expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations to improve somatic mutation detection accuracy.

Syngenta Collaborates with Ginkgo Bioworks to Enable Faster Launch of Innovative Biologicals

Syngenta Crop Protection and Ginkgo Bioworks have announced a new collaboration to accelerate the launch of a novel biological solution. Ginkgo will develop and optimize a microbial strain to meet productivity targets for a secondary metabolite from the Syngenta Biologicals pipeline, expediting Syngenta's go-to-market timeline.

Ginkgo will use its Ag Biologicals capabilities and machine learning to guide strain engineering strategies. This collaboration addresses the need for efficient and sustainable agricultural solutions.

“Biologicals are crucial for sustainable agricultural practices,” said Camilla Corsi, Global Head of Research at Syngenta Crop Protection. Magalie Guilhabert, Head of Ag Biologicals at Ginkgo Bioworks, expressed excitement about expanding their relationship with Syngenta to achieve commercial viability for Syngenta’s new ag biologicals product.
